Why Fat Phobia Will Foil Your Health

We all know a few fat phobics. Holdovers from a past era of dietary fads. They’re constantly referring to things as “fattening” (a word I’ve come to hate as a nutritionist). Their refrigerators are full of “lite” and “non-fat” versions of name-brand processed foods, things like non-fat salad dressing, which is nothing short of a food science miracle, or fat-free ice cream bars rife with additives you’ve never heard of. All this dietary effort, they’ll say, is to prevent the intake of excess fat, and thus the storage of fat in the body. I only wish things were that simple – eat fat, get fat! That would make my job a lot easier. (Or maybe I wouldn’t have a job.) Truth is, despite their hyper-lean methods, fat phobic eaters are almost always struggling with their body weight in one way or another.

As we’ve moved on to the low-carb era, why have we still not mended fences with dietary fats? Why have we not let go of the rumors and slander slung for so long about this quintessential dietary compound?  Continue reading “Why Fat Phobia Will Foil Your Health”

Resolutions That Stick

The time of year (the beginning) is upon us once again when we resolve to do better in the year to come. The New Year can be a motivating time to make healthy lifestyle changes. And yet, New Year’s resolutions are plagued by a stigma of short-term success that often wanes before winter ends. When it comes to resolutions, why are we so shortsighted?

It seems that the social pressure for setting goals, rather than the more intrinsic origin, results in a whole lot of halfhearted and incomplete resolutions. Whether you’re simply resolving “to be more physically active,” for instance, or setting a concrete goal “to lose 30lbs,” it’s not enough to simply state it to yourself and your friends at a holiday dinner or New Year’s Eve party! Instead, take one step further to make your resolutions stick! Continue reading “Resolutions That Stick”

The Link Between Childhood Obesity and BPA

We have blogged about bisphenol A or BPA many times. This chemical is used in food packaging (like linings in cans) and to harden plastic and has been linked to infertility, weight gain in adults, and even cancer. And now a new study shows that children who are overweight also have higher levels of BPA in their bodies than children who are a healthy weight.

Although the study’s findings don’t prove that BPA causes obesity, it is still a concern because this dangerous chemical causes other health problems. One of the possibilities is that children who were considered obese ate more foods that came from cans or packaging that contained BPA. Continue reading “The Link Between Childhood Obesity and BPA”

Finding and Fixing the Holes in Your Wellness Plan (Part 1)

Why is it that we may eat well, exercise and still struggle with our weight and health?

For many of us, making healthier food choices is a way of life. We read labels, we’re mindful of our portions, we limit the amount of sugar, junk and processed foods we eat, we limit our alcohol intake and we make a concerted effort to eat “clean” and healthy.

Many of us also commit to a consistent fitness schedule where we’re walking, running, doing classes, DVD’s, yoga, or organized sports regularly. We put in the time and effort necessary to create a lean, toned and fit body.

So with this kind of effort, why aren’t many of us looking, feeling and living our best?

While eating and exercise are huge steps in the right direction, they’re only a piece of the wellness puzzle. Continue reading “Finding and Fixing the Holes in Your Wellness Plan (Part 1)”
