Red Wine for Slim Waistline

My parents are European, and as far as I can remember  red wine has been at the table with meals. In fact, my father makes his own wine every September from scratch.  Picks his grapes, squishes them in his garage and presses that yummy juice into barrels where it ferments for months before being bottled and consumed.  My husband has also gotten into it and for the last 3 years has made merlot, cabernet and this year a red zinfandel.  Needless, to say, we enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner or at the end of the day.  I am a firm believer that there are many benefits in wine, and have written about them in a previous blog, but a new study published in the March issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine has given me yet another reason to enjoy it.  According to researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston,  light to moderate alcohol consumption, most notably red wine, is not only good for a woman’s heart, it may also help her keep her weight in check. Cardio Revolution

This will burst a lot of people’s bubbles. How often do you see the same person at the gym night after night doing cardio with great dedication and not losing any weight? The following will help you to use your time wisely and get better results There are three energy systems the body uses. (1) The Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) energy system, which provides instant energy for intense exercise such as that used by a powerlifter performing a 1-repetition max; (2) The Non-Oxidative/Glycolytic energy system, which starts to be used after the first 2-3 seconds of exercise, such as that used by a 100 meter sprinter; and (3) The Oxidative energy system, which is used for events lasting longer than 2 minutes. The latter is the most common association people have with doing “cardio” (Wilkins).

Keeping your New Year’s Resolutions: Gender-Based Strategies

What? Men and women think differently! No way. Well, apparently it also holds true for keeping your goals. According to Professor Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire in the U.K., successful strategies for keeping resolutions are often gender dependent. He found that by using gender-specific methods, an extra 22% of men kept their goals, while an additional 10% of women stuck with theirs.
