Foods That Make You Feel Good

A friend of mine passed along this article about foods that are good for you and why. Dr. Kayt Haven wrote an article that is full of great advice! Food CAN be medicine – don’t be afraid of healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is not bad for you, eat the yolks, make dark chocolate your treat of choice… Good stuff!

Although I believe that supplementing with good quality vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is important in a world where soil has become deficient of nutrients, and where fast foods places are where many Americans get much of their daily food intake, this article is also a good reminder that good quality food is important for health.  Supplements are just that – SUPPLEMENTS, not REPLACEMENTS.

Food for Thought: Fast Food for Your Brain

Your brain needs a steady supply of nutrient-rich calories from healthy fats, protein and carbohydrates so that it can function at peak performance. Foods that are high in sugar not only will zap your energy levels, but will also slow down your brain. Next time you need a quick fix, reach for these snacks and foods instead of a chocolate bar.

  • Apple slices with almond butter
  • Greek yogurt with fruit, sprinkled with nuts and seeds
  • Baby carrots with hummus
  • “Ants on a log” (celery with peanut butter and raisins)

These foods are loaded with protein, vitamins and minerals, fiber and healthy fats, all of which will help with focus and energy.

Support Your Immune System: Fish and Flax

Omega-3 fatty acids are good for almost every aspect of health. Abundant in cold water fish, it can also be found in flax and walnuts. Clinical studies have shown that omega-3s are especially supportive of healthy immune system function. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and help modulate the immune system. This means that people with Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, lupus, and colitis may benefit from a daily dose of this essential fatty acid.

If you have a hard time squeezing walnuts and flaxseeds into your diet, and if you aren’t a big fan of sardines and mackerel, an over-the-counter supplement may be what you need. The British Journal of Nutrition reported that doses as low as 600mg per day had a positive effect on the immune function of elderly subjects.  Most people can benefit from taking 1000mg per day. There are fish oil and flax sources available, for those who want a vegetarian version.

Supplements You Shouldn’t Live Without

This past Friday, Dr. Oz told his viewers what supplements he takes. Not surprisingly, they align very well with what Village Green Apothecary has been saying for years. He particularly targeted women over 40. The supplements he recommends  are:

1. Mutlivitamin: Only 1% of the population gets enough essential nutrients from diet alone, so a comprehensive multivitamin/mineral should be part of everyone’s routine. Divided doses are better because you get the most out of them.

2. Calcium: Important for muscles, teeth and bones, many women are not getting enough of this important nutrient. Add magnesium to calcium and you have an important foundation for strong bones. The best way to get calcium is a combination of food sources and supplements. Continue reading “Supplements You Shouldn’t Live Without”

Fish Oils May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

New information came out today that women who regularly take fish oils may have a lower risk of breast cancer! Wahoo! The study was on 35,000 women who were part of a larger study looking at different supplements and health. When the researchers looked at the women who took the fish oil supplements, they found they had a 32% reduced risk of breast cancer, which appeared to be restricted to invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type. Researchers cautioned that fish oil supplements should not be taken for reducing breast cancer risk, and have issued a statement that “without confirming studies…we should not draw any conclusions about a causal relationship.” The study was “observational” only, and not a randomized trial that compared the use of fish oil with a group not using fish oil and the effect on cancer rates.

I think this is another reason to take a good quality Omega 3. Keep in mind that diet, exercise and genetics play huge roles in breast cancer and must be considered as well.
