Is Your Diet Helping or Hurting Your Health?

Your diet creates your foundation of health. Are you making food choices that support or hinder your health?

Unfortunately, we are seeing many unhealthy trends in the American diet. It is important to keep in mind that your eating habits and food choices have the ability to either help or exacerbate many common health complaints such as headaches, fatigue, acid reflux and indigestion, insomnia, and obesity. Below is a list of eating trends that can negatively affect one’s health. These trends put stress on the body and contribute toward inflammation, obesity, and nutrient deficiencies, as well as increase risk factors for various chronic diseases.

  • Eating out more often, much of it being fast food

  • Eating more processed foods (containing high salt, sugar, refined oils, artificial colors, preservatives, unhealthy fats, synthetic ingredients, and other additives) Continue reading “Is Your Diet Helping or Hurting Your Health?”

Food Intolerances and Weight

Suzanne Somer’s new book, Sexy Forever, outlines the secrets she believes are the key to successful weight loss after age 40. She says that hormone balancing, toxic burden on our bodies, leaky gut syndrome and food allergies are all triggers that can affect weight loss.

Most of us are familiar with Suzanne Somer’s cancer survival story and how she chose a more “alternative” approach, foregoing the conventional Western approach of chemotherapy and radiation. In this new book, she shares her personal story of her struggles with weight loss. After balancing hormones, eating organic foods and exercising, she still found that she had fat around her middle that she could not get rid of. Seeing in herself the same symptoms that her gluten-intolerant husband had, she took a food allergy test and discovered that she was allergic to eggs, a staple in her diet. By eliminating eggs she lost 10 pounds.

So how can food allergies affect weight loss? Continue reading “Food Intolerances and Weight”

FDA vs the Dairy Industry

In my house we only drink organic milk and I get teased by people who think I am crazy to spend $10 for a gallon of organic milk (actually, I pay that for 4 litres of milk… I live in Canada), especially when regular milk costs less than half that amount. Personally, I would rather spend less on clothing, trips and gas (for example), and more on quality food for my family. I know there isn’t any possible way that I can protect my family from all the crap that is out there, but this is one area where I can choose to say no to antibiotic-ridden milk. I know, another alternative is to go dairy-free, but I love it, my son loves it, and so I am going to do the best  I can.

The FDA is trying to crack down on the dairy industry because of the use of antibiotics in older cows. The dairy industry isn’t having it. Read this article in the New York Times, and tell us what you think.
