Lunch Bag Tips for Kids

With only weeks to go, now is a good time to start thinking about what you will be packing in your kids’ lunches. As parents, we want to make sure that our kids are eating the most nutritious foods, but in a busy world, achieving this is sometimes easier said than done, and so  we look for simple lunch solutions for our kids.

Some companies put together pre-made lunch kits. Convenient, yes, but these kits are often not a healthy choice. One kit I looked at this weekend contained a whopping 1,940 mg of sodium, well above the daily maximum recommended for young children (1,200 mg). And with only one gram of fiber, this meal won’t go far toward meeting many of your child’s dietary needs.

Here are some tips to help you get ready for lunch packing:

· Prepare and organize school lunches for the entire week on Sunday.

· Ask your children to help out – let them choose favorite fruits, veggies, and sandwich ingredients. Assign them the role of assistant chef. Continue reading “Lunch Bag Tips for Kids”

How to Handle Ear Infections at Home

By the time your child has reached the age of 5, he or she may have already suffered through at least one ear infection. And according to The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), ear infections account for 25 million office visits annually with direct costs for treatment estimated at $3 billion.

Antibiotics are still the most recommended solution to ear infections for children under the age of 1, even though most ear infections are caused by viruses. A study from the Archives of Otolaryngology showed that 88% of children with ear infections never needed antibiotics, and antibiotics did not shorten the lifespan of the illness. Many doctors have started to use a wait and see option for children over the age of 1, basically waiting to see if the ear infection clears up on its own, letting the body’s own immune system do the work in clearing the infection.

Still, as most parents know, ear infections can be painful and we want to protect our children from them as much as possible. If your child has an ear infection, treat the symptoms with the following tips, to help provide relief.

1. Place a warm compress over the infected ear to relieve pain.

2. Gentle massage around the ear may also provide some relief. Continue reading “How to Handle Ear Infections at Home”

Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids

A recent study by researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia shows that feeding your children a healthy diet rather than junk food can result in a higher IQ later in life.

The study, led by Dr. Lisa Smithers, looked at the link between the eating habits of children at 6 months, 15 months and 24 months, and their IQ at 8 years of age.

Researchers studied the dietary patterns of more than 7,000 children during the first two years of life. They compared traditional and contemporary home-prepared food, commercial baby food, breastfeeding, and junk food.

According to Dr. Smithers, “Diet supplies the nutrients needed for the development of brain tissues in the first two years of life, and the aim of this study was to look at what impact diet would have on children’s IQs.”  Continue reading “Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids”
