Are You Getting Enough Fiber?

With Village Green Apothecary’s Big Summer Sale ending at the end of the week, I thought it would be a good time to remind you that Pathway products are 30% off their regular prices. The Pathway brand is a quality line that offers a variety of supplements at great prices. It also is 100% guaranteed, which means if for whatever reason you are not satisfied, you can return the product to the store.

One supplement that I feel most people could benefit from is fiber. Most people do not consume the recommended 35 to 40 grams of fiber per day. An easy way to attain this is to supplement with a fiber product like Pathway ClearFiber. This is a powder than can be mixed with almost any beverage. It is odorless, colorless and it does not thicken the liquid you add it to.

Fiber helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels, increases satiety, maintains healthy bowel movements, cleans out your GI tract and so much more. Good sources of fiber are fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Adding ClearFiber can help you get the fiber your body needs in the easiest way possible. An Orange a Day Keeps Strokes Away

A new study in the journal Stroke has found that citrus fruits, especially oranges and grapefruits, can reduce the risk of strokes. The key to citrus are the flavonoids. Flavonoids are the antioxidant compounds in fruits and vegetables that give them their rich colors—and also many of their health benefits. These benefits are thought to be related to the ability of flavonoids to improve blood vessel function and to their anti-inflammatory effects.

Although more research is needed, it seems eating the whole fruit is definitely preferable to just drinking its juice. Most juices contain fewer nutrients and often contain added sugar. According to the paper, “Given the higher flavanone content of citrus fruits and the sugar content of commercial fruit juices, public health recommendations should focus on increasing citrus fruit intake.” Continue reading “An Orange a Day Keeps Strokes Away”

More Reasons to Eat More Fiber

Eating a fiber-rich diet has many health benefits, including supporting cardiovascular health, blood sugar balance, promoting digestive and colon health, supporting weight management, and cholesterol reduction. And now, a recent meta-analysis shows that a high-fiber diet is also associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.

Nutrition and health experts recommend that men and women eat at least 25 grams of fiber daily, if not more. Unfortunately, many people tend to fall short of this suggested amount. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes provide the body with great sources of fiber. These foods provide different forms of fiber (insoluble and soluble) and we need them both for optimal health.

Insoluble fiber (mainly found in whole grains and vegetables) tends to act like a bulking agent and can help speed elimination. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve and therefore can help with the feeling of fullness and aid the body in toxin removal. Soluble fiber (found mainly in legumes, vegetables, and fruits) can help to stabilize blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol by forming a gel-like substance that slows down digestion and the absorption of cholesterol.
