Weight and Breast Cancer

In a recent study in the journal Cancer, weight has been linked to higher reoccurrence of breast cancer, as well as increasing the likelihood of dying of cancer.

According to lead researcher Joseph Sparano, “Obesity seemed to carry a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and death, even in women who were healthy at the time that they were diagnosed, and despite the fact that they received the best available chemotherapy and hormone therapy.”

One of the reasons for this may be that women who are overweight tend to make more estrogen, which can fuel the growth of estrogen receptor-positive tumors. And estrogen receptor-positive cancer accounts for 2/3 of breast cancers.  Continue reading “Weight and Breast Cancer”

Smile: It’s Good For You

A study in the journal Psychological Science has found that your approach to life may help cut your stress during life’s tricky situations.

The study investigated the potential benefits of smiling by looking at how different types of smiling, and the awareness of smiling, affects a person’s ability to recover from episodes of stress.

The team found smiling could indeed influence our physical state, lowering heart rate levels after stressful activities. This was found to be the case even when the smile was forced.

Here are some other tips to help with stress. Although these tips are targeted for stress in the workplace, many of them can be applied to everyday stressors.

What do you do to help you cope with stress?

Adrenal Fatigue: The Working Mom’s Syndrome

I’m about to explain one of the most common, yet one of the most overlooked health problems impacting many women. You’ll understand exactly how and why you’re so tired and why you may be relying on caffeine and sugar to give you the energy you need to get you through your day. You’ll understand why you may have suddenly gained a few pounds, why you seem to be getting sick more often and why you may have grown more impatient. You’ll learn why you may feel like you have “brain fog,” where you don’t feel as sharp or clear as you once did and why you’re forgetting details that in the past were easy to remember. You’ll understand why you lost your sex drive, why PMS symptoms seem to be getting worse, why everyday tasks seem to require more effort than before, why your ability to handle stress seems to be decreasing, and why it’s harder to be productive and stay on task. You’ll understand how and why you “lost your mojo.” Finally, you’ll understand why even though you may have gone to the doctor for one or many of these issues, they didn’t diagnose anything and sent you on your way without a plan or a solution.  Continue reading “Adrenal Fatigue: The Working Mom’s Syndrome”

3 Steps to Bone Health

Establishing strong bones should start young. Did you know that 90% of peak bone mass is reached by the age of 18 in girls and 20 in boys? So it would make sense that we do the most we can to increase bone density in our younger years, as opposed to just trying to prevent it when we are older.

Bone is living tissue that changes constantly, with bits of old bone being removed and replaced by new bone. At about the age of 30, the amount of bone being made starts to decrease, increasing the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

There are many factors that affect peak bone mass. Some like gender and race cannot be changed. However, there are three factors that you can do something about.

1. Diet/Nutrition: Maintaining a healthy diet that combines calcium-rich foods is important to building and maintaining bone density. Dairy (organic is best), dark leafy greens, almonds and salmon are rich calcium sources and should be incorporated into your diet to achieve the recommended 1000mg of calcium per day. If you have a hard time achieving that with food, supplementing with a calcium product like Pathway Bone Guardian is an important factor to consider. Continue reading “3 Steps to Bone Health”
