In a recent study in the journal Cancer, weight has been linked to higher reoccurrence of breast cancer, as well as increasing the likelihood of dying of cancer.
According to lead researcher Joseph Sparano, “Obesity seemed to carry a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and death, even in women who were healthy at the time that they were diagnosed, and despite the fact that they received the best available chemotherapy and hormone therapy.”
One of the reasons for this may be that women who are overweight tend to make more estrogen, which can fuel the growth of estrogen receptor-positive tumors. And estrogen receptor-positive cancer accounts for 2/3 of breast cancers.
Although, the study did not clarify if losing weight decreased the risk, there are many known benefits to maintaining a healthy weight, by eating well and exercising. Here are some tips to a achieve or maintain a healthy weight.
· Aim for 7 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and the more varied the colors, the better.
· Drink 8 glasses of water per day.
· Move! Get 30 minutes of exercise a day… every day! Walking, swimming, biking – it all counts.
