Nutrient Depletion: Antidepressants

Prozax, Zoloft and Paxil are just a few of the frequently prescribed drugs that fall under a category of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs work by increasing the amount of serotonin (a feel-good neurotransmitter) available. Some people experience symptoms of depression when certain brain chemicals become imbalanced.

For some people, antidepressants can be life changing, but long-term use may result in depletions of certain nutrients that are important for overall health.

Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B2 in particular have been shown to be deficient in people who take antidepressants. CoQ10 is an important antioxidant and membrane stabilizer, and is a cofactor in many metabolic pathways, particularly in the production of ATP (energy). Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is involved in energy production, prevention of anemia, immune health, eye health, and nervous system health.  Continue reading “Nutrient Depletion: Antidepressants”

Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men

The results of a large study have shown that healthy men who took a multivitamin for at least 10 years decreased their risk of cancer by 8%. It may not seem like a lot, but a decrease is a decrease, and when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, cancer risk reduces even more.

One of the participants who took a placebo, Dr. David Chapin, a 73-year-old gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that although he had “never believed” in vitamins, he might start taking a daily multivitamin now, despite the modest benefit.

“A lot of studies make big news, but when you look at the nitty-gritty, they don’t show all that much,” Chapin said, adding that he recently discovered he had been taking a placebo pill. “This was a very reliable study, it was very well designed and administered, and it went on and on and on.”

When choosing a multivitamin here are some tips. Continue reading “Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men”

Study Reveals How to Help Prevent an Attack by the Common Cold Virus

A study published in Advances in Therapy has demonstrated that garlic won’t just keep vampires away, but it can also help keep you from catching the common cold.

Participants were either given a placebo or an allicin-containing garlic supplement. Allicin is the ingredient in garlic that gives it its antibacterial properties and according to this research, it may have some antiviral properties as well.

During the 90-day study, 24 colds were recorded in the group given garlic and 65 in the placebo group. The placebo group also took a longer time to recover from their colds compared to the garlic group. Continue reading “Study Reveals How to Help Prevent an Attack by the Common Cold Virus”
