Support Your Immune System: Multivitamin/Mineral

Even the most conscientious, healthy eaters may have a hard time getting all the vitamins and minerals required to prevent disease and illness.  Eating right is the first line of defense against all bugs, but a good multivitamin/mineral can provide some assurance against nutrient deficient diseases like rickets and scurvy. Look for a multivitamin that contains at least 100% of the required daily allowance (RDA) for vitamins A, C, D, E and your B vitamins. Choose one that is iron-free unless you are pregnant, or have been tested for iron deficiency.

Taking a multivitamin more than once per day can help keep water-soluble vitamins in your system longer. Look for one that is designed to take multiple times during the day.  Take your multivitamin with meals and a full glass of water to ensure proper digestion.

1 in 3 Americans Will Develop Diabetes by 2050

According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 3 Americans will have type 2 diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue.

Aging population, inactivity, and obesity are all reasons for the potential increase. Lifestyle changes are one key way to help decrease the prevalence.

Walking as little as 30 minutes per day can help your body’s ability to use insulin. Watch for future blogs about some supplements that can help control blood sugar.

Foods That Make You Feel Good

A friend of mine passed along this article about foods that are good for you and why. Dr. Kayt Haven wrote an article that is full of great advice! Food CAN be medicine – don’t be afraid of healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is not bad for you, eat the yolks, make dark chocolate your treat of choice… Good stuff!

Although I believe that supplementing with good quality vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is important in a world where soil has become deficient of nutrients, and where fast foods places are where many Americans get much of their daily food intake, this article is also a good reminder that good quality food is important for health.  Supplements are just that – SUPPLEMENTS, not REPLACEMENTS.

Diagnostic Tools and Screening Tests for Breast Cancer

Aside from mammography, there are other diagnostic tools that can be used to confirm the presence or absence of cancer. However, most health care professionals still consider these as a supplement to mammography and not a replacement. Sort of like breast self-exams and the ones done by your doctor. Although there has been much controversy about breast self-exams and their effectiveness, I still think it is important to do them. You should know and be familiar with your body, and if something doesn’t feel quite right, you can go to the doctor and let them know. Then a follow-up can be done with a diagnostic test of some kind.

Mammograms have been an important step in helping women detect breast cancer early. However, this test can be painful, uncomfortable and sometimes unreliable. It also adds radiation to the body. Thermography, or digital infrared imaging (DII) is a painless, non-invasive procedure that uses an infrared camera and a computer to detect, analyze and produce high resolution diagnostic images of temperature variations within the breast. One of the key benefits of thermography is its sensitivity to detecting abnormalities or changes in tissues long before a mammogram or other screening method could. So, while mammography relies on finding the physical tumor, thermography can detect the new blood vessels and chemical changes associated with a tumor’s growth. ‘Tis the Season for Colds and Flus

I got my first cold last week, no thanks to my little guy, who probably picked it up from one his little friends. This is how it starts – you catch a bug from your kids, who picked it up at daycare or at school, and then you pass it along to your co-workers…and a vicious cycle of sneezing and runny noses starts.

There is little that you can do about what your child does at school or daycare, but there are things you can do at home to build your immune system and protect the spread of these viruses. Every week I have been posting about ways to support your immune system with herbs and supplements, but there are other things that you need to consider as well. At Village Green Apothecary, we have made a Cold and Flu Tips sheet to give you the tools that you need to stay healthy this season. I suggest you share this with family, friends and co-workers. Take note of the most important rule: WASH YOUR HANDS! This is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and other bugs.

Do you have any tips for fighting colds and flus?
