Creating Your Own Wellness Plan

Someone recently asked me, “What steps do I take to work towards better health?” Here’s what I said.

When someone realizes they want/need to work towards better health, there are certain steps to take in order to create lasting lifelong changes. The first step is figuring out what needs to change. Look at your lifestyle and determine where you need to improve. It can be in the areas of nutrition, fitness, emotional wellness, stress control, relationships and even spirituality. Determine which areas need work and start there.

The next step is to design a realistic plan with mini-goals. To overhaul your routine is temporary and can be destructive to your self-esteem and well-being. Setting a realistic goal (for example: drink more water, exercise 1 more day than the week before, no eating off of anyone else’s plates, etc.) and achieving it builds self-esteem and confidence to continue.

You know where your struggles and greatest obstacles lie. For some people, it’s finding time for fitness. For others it’s dealing with binge/emotional or mindless eating. For some it’s finding better outlets for stress control. Whatever you’re struggling with most is the first place to start because that’s what’s holding you back from looking, feeling and living your best.

The key is to determine what needs “tweaking” so that you put yourself on the road to better health. Believe it or not, even spending time with positive, optimistic people as opposed to negative, pessimistic people is a step in the right direction. Happy, upbeat people actually support and strengthen our immune system!

Pomegranates: Nature’s Candy

We have been on a continuous sugar high since Halloween. My almost 3-year-old really got into it this year, as he realized that people were giving away free candy. After many tears, we had to pry his pumpkin bucket full of teeth-rotting goodies out of his hands and hide it.

As luck may have it, I was serving pomegranate seeds for snacks and guess what? He thought they were CANDY! He soon forgot about his confiscated Halloween treats and ate his “red candy.”

Besides resembling candy and being so tasty that a toddler believes they are candy, pomegranates have many health benefits. Here are some other reasons to eat this delicious red fruit.

  • On average, one piece of this super fruit contains around a quarter of our recommended daily vitamin C intake.
  • The powerful benefits of pomegranate may help to stop cancer. Studies have shown positive effects in preventing tumor growth, and it could cut down the risk of breast cancer.
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Studies have shown that it can improve libido in men and women.
  • Antioxidants can help to reduce the effects of aging, lower cholesterol, and prevent heart disease.
  • It is proven to lower blood pressure.
  • Some other possible pomegranate health benefits are as support for menopause, fertility, menstruation, stroke, heart attack, aching joints, sore throat, headache.

Some people find pomegranates to have a sharp taste, so drizzling organic honey on them will make them more pleasing for those with a sweet tooth. If you still can’t find a way to eat a pomegranate a day, Pathway Berry Fusion is a tasty alternative that provides all the benefits of pomegranates (plus other superfoods) in an easy-to-mix powder.

Flossing Can Affect Fertility

New research out of the University of Western Australia links oral health to fertility. Flossing, brushing your teeth and seeing your dentist regularly are all important when trying to conceive. The study looked at 3500 women and found that poor oral health causes inflammation and can delay conception by about two months.

If your gums are pale or bleed when you brush you may already have gum disease. Aside from seeing your dentist, brushing and flossing, a mouth wash or rinse can also be very beneficial. Pathway GUM TONIC is an herbal formula that helps strengthen gum tissue with its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. Ingredients include goldenseal root, bayberry root bark, prickly ash, myrrh gum, and coptis root. Mix 1 dropperful in a small amount of water and rinse. Not only is this formula great for gums, but it is also helpful for painful canker sores too.

Get Rid of Head Lice Naturally

I don’t think there is anything that parents fear most, than their children coming home with head lice. Just thinking about is making my skin crawl! Unfortunately, millions of kids contract these teeny tiny blood sucking lice every year.

Head lice lay tiny teardrop-shaped, whitish eggs in shells called nits. The nits attach to individual hairs with a tough, gluey cement, making them impossible to remove with ordinary shampooing. After a seven- to 10-day incubation period, the nits hatch, leaving behind a dull gray casing. They mature within a week and start the cycle again.

Lice are very contagious and spread through direct contact. So when kids lie together or touch heads, or when their toys touch or when they share hair brushes lice can be spread easily. And, then guess what…they spread it all over the house when they come home.

Although lice do not carry disease, they are super itchy and uncomfortable for those that are affected.

Since fall seems to be the time of year that lice spread, here are some handy tips to help decrease the likelihood of your child bringing them home. Continue reading “Get Rid of Head Lice Naturally”
