5 Tips for New Moms’ Nutrition

Eating healthy becomes increasingly difficult when you have a little one whose needs seem to come before yours. However, taking care of yourself is crucial because the healthier you are, the better mom you are going to be to your little one. Here are some tips that may make it easier to eat right.

1. Feed your cravings. Be smart about it though – if you crave sweets, try a square of dark chocolate. An ounce of this yummy treat contains heart healthy flavonoids. (antioxidants that fight free radicals that can lead to heart disease and cancer).

2. Eat your water and drink your veggies. I got this great tip from a friend of mine. Basically, eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies, as these will help your body hold onto water longer. Plus you get all the great benefits from them, like fiber, vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. This is especially important if you are nursing. Your body needs to stay hydrated to keep milk flow up. Drink your veggies by using a yummy greens drink.  This will not only keep you hydrated, but increase your chances of getting the necessary 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies per day. Another Reason to Take Fish Oil – RvD2

RvD2 – no it’s not another Star Wars character.  RvD2 (Resolvin D2) is a chemical that is derived from omega 3 fish oils. Researchers have discovered that this chemical reduces inflammation. And unlike anti-inflammatory drugs used to traditionally treat arthritis, RvD2 doesn’t suppress the immune system.  Come to think of it, I have never seen a salmon hobbling about.

Pathway Ultra EPA 500

Pathway ULTRA EPA provides 500 mg of EPA and 100 mg of DHA per softgel. This is almost three times the level of EPA found in most omega 3 supplements. EPA has been shown to support healthy cardiovascular function and inflammatory responses within the body and DHA aids in the structural support of cell membranes, which is essential for brain and eye health.  EPA can also help with mood. A 2002 study published in the American journal of psychiatry  found that after only four weeks, six out of ten patients receiving EPA had significantly reduced symtpoms of depression.

Interested in the benefits that omega 3’s provide but don’t want to a fish source? So what are the benefits of DHA?  There really are plenty, but here are three that demonstrate that everyone from infants to adults can benefit from this supplement. Continue reading “Pathway Neuromins: The Vegetarian DHA Supplement”
