Weight and Breast Cancer

In a recent study in the journal Cancer, weight has been linked to higher reoccurrence of breast cancer, as well as increasing the likelihood of dying of cancer.

According to lead researcher Joseph Sparano, “Obesity seemed to carry a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and death, even in women who were healthy at the time that they were diagnosed, and despite the fact that they received the best available chemotherapy and hormone therapy.”

One of the reasons for this may be that women who are overweight tend to make more estrogen, which can fuel the growth of estrogen receptor-positive tumors. And estrogen receptor-positive cancer accounts for 2/3 of breast cancers.  Continue reading “Weight and Breast Cancer”

Men and Fertility

Fertility is not just a women’s issue. Statistics show that 35-40% of infertility issues are male related. So it makes sense to look at how men can improve their chances for conception, as well.

Stress, alcohol and smoking are the most common culprits when dealing with male-related infertility, but there are many other factors that can lower testosterone, decrease sperm concentration, limit motility or even damage sperm, including:

· Obesity

· Prescription medications: talk to your doctor to see if the medications you are taking affect fertility

· Heavy metals, such as lead and mercury

· Hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and laptops Continue reading “Men and Fertility”

Adrenal Fatigue: The Working Mom’s Syndrome

I’m about to explain one of the most common, yet one of the most overlooked health problems impacting many women. You’ll understand exactly how and why you’re so tired and why you may be relying on caffeine and sugar to give you the energy you need to get you through your day. You’ll understand why you may have suddenly gained a few pounds, why you seem to be getting sick more often and why you may have grown more impatient. You’ll learn why you may feel like you have “brain fog,” where you don’t feel as sharp or clear as you once did and why you’re forgetting details that in the past were easy to remember. You’ll understand why you lost your sex drive, why PMS symptoms seem to be getting worse, why everyday tasks seem to require more effort than before, why your ability to handle stress seems to be decreasing, and why it’s harder to be productive and stay on task. You’ll understand how and why you “lost your mojo.” Finally, you’ll understand why even though you may have gone to the doctor for one or many of these issues, they didn’t diagnose anything and sent you on your way without a plan or a solution.  Continue reading “Adrenal Fatigue: The Working Mom’s Syndrome”

Creating Your Best Home Gym: How to Find the Right Equipment for Your Budget and Needs

You had the best of intentions when joining the gym or fitness studio, but if you’re not using your membership, it may be because it’s not perfectly suited to your needs and lifestyle. Maybe the hours don’t work, there’s no babysitting, or you can’t hop on the machine you want when you want because it’s being used by someone else. It could be too far from your home or office, out of the way, or maybe it’s simply inconvenient!

If all of that sounds about right, then it may be time to consider creating your own perfect home gym based on your unique needs, budget, preferences, and lifestyle.  Continue reading “Creating Your Best Home Gym: How to Find the Right Equipment for Your Budget and Needs”

An Easy Way to Cut 248 Calories Each Day

People who stay up late and sleep in late tend to eat on average 248 calories more per day than those who go to sleep earlier and get up earlier. Research published in the journal Obesity also found that night owls ate twice as much fast food and half as many fruits as vegetables as the early risers.

The extra calories can really add up to significant weight gain, especially if they aren’t balanced with daily exercise. An extra 248 calories per day can mean 2 pounds a month or 24 pounds per year.

So, the next time you feel you are up late and are reaching for a couple of oreos and some milk, you may want to rethink it and hit the sack instead.
