What Would it Take For Your “Garden” to Grow?

Last weekend I drove by a nursery and noticed many people excited to get everything they need to grow a perfect garden. While some held plants, some held flowers, some held seeds and others held gardening tools, these people all shared the same intention, to plant and grow a beautiful garden. Well, that got me thinking…

What does it take for a garden to flourish and thrive? Seemed to me that in order for plants or flowers to thrive, they need many of the same things we do.

Think about it. When planting flowers, we want to plant them on moist, nutrient rich soil, water them frequently, plant them where they’ll receive sunlight, adequate space and in an area that encourages their growth. Now take a look at us. What conditions do we need to grow, thrive and be our best? The moist, nutrient rich soil can be compared to eating healthy food. Are you eating a colorful, nutrient rich, healthy diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and plenty of water? Just as the garden grows best when it has quality nutrients it can absorb, our bodies perform better when we eat quality foods packed with healthy ingredients while hydrating ourselves with enough water. 5 Tips for New Moms’ Nutrition

Eating healthy becomes increasingly difficult when you have a little one whose needs seem to come before yours. However, taking care of yourself is crucial because the healthier you are, the better mom you are going to be to your little one. Here are some tips that may make it easier to eat right.

1. Feed your cravings. Be smart about it though – if you crave sweets, try a square of dark chocolate. An ounce of this yummy treat contains heart healthy flavonoids. (antioxidants that fight free radicals that can lead to heart disease and cancer).

2. Eat your water and drink your veggies. I got this great tip from a friend of mine. Basically, eat a lot of raw fruits and veggies, as these will help your body hold onto water longer. Plus you get all the great benefits from them, like fiber, vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. This is especially important if you are nursing. Your body needs to stay hydrated to keep milk flow up. Drink your veggies by using a yummy greens drink.  This will not only keep you hydrated, but increase your chances of getting the necessary 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies per day. Digestive Enzymes – The Key to Digestive Health

Ideal digestive function is at the core of good health. Not only does our digestive system break down and absorb nutrients, but it also houses 60-70% of the immune system. Digestive complaints such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, gas, bloating, and reflux, are each important symptoms that should be examined for the root cause. If not resolved, digestive problems can lead to the development of serious health conditions. Fortunately, there are things that you can do help with your digestive health.

Digestive enzymes are necessary for digestion and absorption of food. Adding more enzymes to your diet is beneficial due to the destruction of enzymes in the cooking and/or processing of foods. Enzyme deficiencies can result in poor absorption and other health problems. Pathway DIGASE contains the full complement of enzymes complemented by gentian root, caraway seed, and ginger root to support digestion. This unique product is formulated to provide as much as 80% of the digestive elements needed for the typical meal.

Check out this video by Registered Dietitian Natalie Butler about the cause of enzyme depletion and what can be done to improve digestive health.  Around the 6 minute mark, she discusses supplemental enzymes and her personal experience with irritable bowel syndrome and enzymes.

Simple Ways to Support Female Reproductive Health

Eat well – make sure you have a varied diet, with good fats (omega -3 rich, as in flax and fish oils) and lots of color! It’s especially important to support your liver with lots of dark leafy greens, fiber and liver-supportive herbs. It’s your liver’s job to process all of your hormones and if it’s sluggish, hormone levels can be imbalanced.

  • Consider taking a multivitamin-mineral supplement. Our diets, no matter how good, may not be supplying all that we need. Calcium and magnesium are especially important, but all the antioxidant vitamins and minerals, as well as trace minerals, are also vital.
