What Supplements Do I Really Need?

multivitamins_smallCustomers often ask me to recommend a basic supplement plan for them. Of course, everyone is unique and has different needs, but there are four supplements that I do often recommend as a solid foundational base. From there, we can branch out to cover other areas of support based on age, gender, health risks, and health concerns. I also like to utilize some great lab testing that can help assess one’s micronutrient levels and nutrient needs. This information can be very helpful in personalizing and maximizing a nutrition program.

Many of the most prevalent health conditions are directly linked to improper nutrition and poor lifestyle habits. Continue reading “What Supplements Do I Really Need?”

Answers to Commonly Asked Questions About Multivitamins

question-markI get a lot of questions about multivitamins ranging from wondering how important they are, to what makes some better than others, to what one should look for in a good in a top-quality multivitamin. Here are some answers.

Are multivitamins really necessary?

Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are essential for good health and support almost every function of the body. Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men

The results of a large study have shown that healthy men who took a multivitamin for at least 10 years decreased their risk of cancer by 8%. It may not seem like a lot, but a decrease is a decrease, and when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, cancer risk reduces even more.

One of the participants who took a placebo, Dr. David Chapin, a 73-year-old gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that although he had “never believed” in vitamins, he might start taking a daily multivitamin now, despite the modest benefit.

“A lot of studies make big news, but when you look at the nitty-gritty, they don’t show all that much,” Chapin said, adding that he recently discovered he had been taking a placebo pill. “This was a very reliable study, it was very well designed and administered, and it went on and on and on.”

When choosing a multivitamin here are some tips. Continue reading “Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men”

Multivitamins May Reduce Colon Cancer Risk

New research published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (CJPP) has found an 84% reduction in developing precancerous lesions and tumors when rats were fed a high fat, low fiber diet, with the addition of a multivitamin and mineral supplement. Six groups were fed the low fiber, high fat diet and given different combinations of supplements and carcinogens that mimicked human colon cancer. The conclusion was that regular supplements of multivitamins and minerals could reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Colon cancer is the second most common form of the disease affecting men and women in the US, with nearly 150,000 new diagnoses each year. Diet and lifestyle choices play a large role in colon health. High fiber and nutrient dense foods are important in keeping the colon healthy. And now research indicates the importance of a good quality multivitamin and mineral as well.

Pathway Multi Two is a comprehensive multivitamin and mineral that incorporates the latest research on nutrient transport and interaction to enhance absorption.

Spring Cleaning for Your Body

April is around the corner and hopefully so is the nice weather! This is a great time do some spring cleaning for your body, and not just your house. Cleanses can be difficult and limiting, but there are simple things that anyone can do to feel more energized and healthy. By following a cleanse filled with high fiber and nutrient-dense foods, you give your body the opportunity to “clean out the pipes.”

Here are some tips to get you on your way:

1. Skip the caffeine: Coffee and sodas are acidic, as well as act as diuretics. Instead of coffee, I recommend drinking herbal tea, green tea or white tea for the antioxidant effect and to help you get rid of any coffee withdrawal headaches.

2. Eat lots of colorful foods: Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, filled with minerals, vitamins and plant chemicals called phytonutrients that prevent and even help treat disease. Continue reading “Spring Cleaning for Your Body”
