3 Reasons to Give Your Kids Probiotics

healthy-kidProbiotics are a great way to help even the healthiest kids. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that have a wide array of benefits. Found in fermented foods like yogurts or kefir, or in a nutritional supplement such as Pathway Kids’ Acidophilus, here are just a few reasons why you may want to consider giving your kids probiotics.

1. Probiotics can help counteract side effects of antibiotics. Although there are cases when antibiotics are a necessary and very helpful medication, antibiotics are becoming less frequently prescribed for children. Unfortunately children sometimes develop diarrhea when they take antibiotics, as the healthy bacteria in the gut become collateral damage in the antibiotic’s fight against disease-causing bacteria. Probiotics, particularity Saccharomyces boulardii, can help reduce the risk of this type of diarrhea. Spice Up Your Immune System With Oil of Oregano

reliance-oregano-oil_2Oregano can  be a tasty addition to a pizza or any Italian dish, but did you know that the oil extracted from this herb can have positive effects on your immune system, too?

In ancient Greece, Hippocrates used oregano as an antiseptic, and as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments. Current healthcare practitioners use oregano extract for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Oregano oil has so many benefits that it is probably a good herb to have around the house. Here are a few reasons why.

Antimicrobial: Oil of oregano contains two phenols called carvacrol and thymol, which have strong antimicrobial properties. A 2004 study demonstrated that oil of oregano showed antibacterial properties against 27 different bacteria (including salmonella, E. coli, and two staphylococcus species, some of the most common bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illnesses) and antiviral properties against the herpes virus (responsible for cold sores, chicken pox, and shingles), as well as antifungal properties against 18 different types of fungus. 5 Tips to Prepare for Cold Season

cold+catWe are in the thick of it here. Coughing, runny noses and plenty of sneezing. The common cold took us by surprise, especially with the warm weather we have been having. So now we are all taking it a little easy, drinking plenty of fluids, and loading up on fruits and veggies. Here are five other tips to help you prepare for cold season.

1. Vitamin D – Immune support is just one of the many benefits of vitamin D. Research has shown that if your vitamin D levels are low, your immune system suffers. Start with 1000 mg per day and talk to your healthcare practitioner about getting your levels tested. You may need to take a lot more.

2. Sleep – Sleep may be the best treatment and prevention for colds and flu. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system – leading us to have a less than optimal fever response (fever is actually the body’s way of fighting infection), and less antibodies produced on exposure to these viruses. The result? Stronger symptoms and a longer duration of symptoms, compared to individuals who are getting adequate sleep. Continue reading “5 Tips to Prepare for Cold Season”

Back-to-School Germs: Hand Washing

hand-washingAs your children get ready to go back to school (if they aren’t there already), it is important to remind them to wash their hands often. According to my doctor, this time of year keeps her especially busy.

Colds, viruses and strep throat are common illnesses seen in those first few weeks of school. Kids spend the whole summer collecting germs, and once they start school, they are back in close quarters and those germs are easily spread. The best defense is good hand hygiene, including proper hand washing. Show your children how to wash their hands with soap and water, and for at least 20 seconds. If you have very little ones, tell them to sing the ABCs while they are washing.

Here are four other tips to help strengthen your kids’ immune system:

1. Get your kids to eat breakfast in the morning. Fuel them. Eating breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should include complex carbohydrates and protein to get them through the morning. Continue reading “Back-to-School Germs: Hand Washing”
