Fermented Foods: In-Season in the Off Season

Sauerkraut 010Right about this time of year the produce aisle of the grocery store starts feeling less than inspiring. In-season options are limited to storage vegetables like potatoes, onions and winter squash, which are getting old. Citrus is delicious, but you can only eat so many oranges and grapefruits.

So where do we turn to entertain our palates until spring?  What’s in season when nothing is in season?

The traditional answer is fermented foods!  Think sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha. Continue reading “Fermented Foods: In-Season in the Off Season”

Four F’s of Digestive Health

Digestive dysfunction is one of the most common ills of today’s population. Symptoms of acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation and bloating have become so normal that people often don’t recognize them as problems to be solved, if they recognize them at all. The allopathic diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) has become increasingly popular, leaving patients concerned and completely clueless as to the true source of or potential solution to their discomfort. Truth is, from intestinal parasites to food intolerances to emotional stress, digestive imbalances can have a variety of causes. Continue reading “Four F’s of Digestive Health”

Support Your Immune System: Probiotics

Beneficial bacteria are critical to a healthy digestive and immune system. We all have them and without them, poor assimilation of nutrients, intestinal irritation or constipation can result. But their effects go beyond those commonly associated with digestion, including affecting our immune system.

Some preliminary studies also report that certain probiotics can play a role in reducing the development of allergies in children, decreasing Helicobacter pylori colonization of the stomach, helping patients cope with side effects of antibiotics, managing relapse of some inflammatory bowel conditions, decreasing the risk of certain cancers, decreasing dental-caries-causing microbes in the mouth, and keeping healthy people healthy.

Here are some other clinical benefits of probiotics:

Gastrointestinal Health: Probiotics have a beneficial effect on specific pathologic conditions. Many studies support the use of probiotics for digestive health. Probiotics may also help prevent traveler’s diarrhea and antibiotic-related diarrhea. Continue reading “Support Your Immune System: Probiotics”

Nutrients to Support Digestive Health

Perma Plus combines four key nutrients to help strengthen the integrity of the intestinal wall and enhance the digestive process.

L-Glutamine  is the most abundant amino acid in the human body, where it functions as a major fuel source. Glutamine also is important for the health of the intestinal wall, protecting against bacterial translocation and promoting healing. Glutamine is stored in muscle tissue in order to meet the needs of other body tissues and inhibits muscle atrophy induced by stress hormones.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine (NAG) is a major component of mucopolysaccharides and as such is a key component in connective tissue. The gut and gastric epithelium (especially the glycocalyx) contain high concentrations of mucopolysaccharides, which help provide structural integrity in the intestinal wall. NAG has been shown to accelerate wound healing.

Aloe Vera extract contains polysaccharides and other substances that stimulate tissue growth and repair processes, reduce inflammation, inhibit pathogens, and strengthen immune function. Fructo-Oligosaccharides (FOS) enhance the growth of healthy bacteria that are necessary for digestive processes.
