Healthy Snacks for Spring Sports

Longer days and warmer weather go hand-in-hand with spring sports. As we eagerly shed our winter wardrobe – and any excess winter weight we may have gained during the “off season” –  it’s helpful to have some fresh, energizing but simple snacks on hand to give us that extra edge.

The best choices are snacks that are light and portable that we can easily pack and eat before or after a competitive game, match or tryout. Remember the saying, “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail”? Taking a few minutes to plan your snacking can make all the difference in giving you the sustained energy you need so you can get the most out of whichever sport you’re playing.

So, what are some snacks to choose which will fuel your body for maximum energy, health and endurance? Here are a few with the right mix of carbohydrates, protein and a touch of fat to give you loads of energy while helping you easily recover so you can “stay in the game” as long as you’d like. Living Green and Healthy: 5 Health Benefits from Going Green

I spend a fair amount of time on Living Green and Saving Energy describing how to go green and save money as a result. But as important as saving money is for most people, perhaps it is not the most important benefit of a greener lifestyle. Green living can improve your health as well.

Here are five health benefits you can realize from creating a greener lifestyle.

1. A healthier heart: Regular exercise has obvious health benefits. By walking or riding a bike to replace your car for short trips, you get some cardio exercise and save gas and reduce carbon emissions all at once. Even taking the bus or train will help, since you can walk or bike to and from the bus stop or train station.

2. A healthier diet: Buying locally-produced food saves on fuel for transporting that food to the market, and smaller local growers are more likely to offer organically-grown produce that is fresher as well. Shopping at farmer’s markets is a good way to find these items, making sure your food is pesticide-free. In addition, reducing consumption of meat lowers your carbon footprint due to the greater amounts of energy, water, and resources used to produce meat compared to vegetables. And eating less red meat is good for almost everyone’s health. Continue reading “Living Green and Healthy: 5 Health Benefits from Going Green”

Your Diet Legacy and Your Daughter

As moms, we often try to instill our beliefs, values, ethics, morals and standards of behavior onto our children. Often, our goal is to ensure that our children learn from the benefit of our knowledge and experience so that they can create enriching, rewarding lives for themselves. So why is it then that one of the most significant messages moms often pass on to their daughters is the legacy of dieting?

Every mom wants the best for her children; there is no question about that. But unfortunately, when a mom lives through the emotional and physical pain that her overweight body may cause, she unknowingly passes the “right to diet” on as though it were a “right of passage” into womanhood.

Maybe the mom wants to prevent her daughter from suffering from low self-esteem. Maybe the mom wants to ensure that her daughter is spared the harsh judgment from others as a result of excess weight. Finally, maybe the mom regrets not having the confidence to pursue a goal or dream and wants to make sure her daughter doesn’t pass up similar opportunities. Healthy Fast Food

I never really understood the concept of fast food, or what we in North America consider fast food. The drive-thru line can be 20 minutes long and that’s before I have ordered, paid or even eaten that greasy burger and 1,000 calorie milkshake. The whole experience can rob me of 30 minutes of my day and I am left wondering if this fast food option was really fast.

Here are a few options that anyone can make at home, and still have time to spare:

AB and H with WG
Prep time: 5 minutes

A twist on the classic peanut butter and jelly.  Almond Butter and Honey with Wheat Germ.

  • 2 tbsps of almond butter
  • 1 to 2 tsps of local honey
  • 1 tbsp of wheat germ

Blend until creamy and spread over multigrain bread. This yummy alternative is loaded with calcium, iron, vitamin E and fiber. Continue reading “Healthy Fast Food”
