5-HTP: The Natural Mood Supporter

5-HTP is a precursor to the hormones serotonin and melatonin. It has been compared to many antidepressant medications because of its positive effect on mood.

Serotonin regulates mood, behavior, appetite, dilation of blood vessels and many other body processes. Serotonin is released in response to fullness and regulates appetite. Deficiency of serotonin may lead to overeating and obesity. This also accounts for the fact that when we are under stress, our appetite tends to change.

Melatonin regulates the body’s sleep/wake cycles. Optimal levels of melatonin allow us to have restful and restorative sleep. Melatonin also cues the body to release growth hormone and sex hormones, which are used during sleep to repair body tissues and normalize hormone levels. Finally, melatonin is an antioxidant that protects tissue by neutralizing damaging free radicals.

Before taking 5-HTP, consult with a health care professional. 5-HTP can interact with certain medications like antidepressants.

Natural Support for Candida

Candidiasis (yeast overgrowth) can trigger a variety of symptoms. Some of the ways in which it can manifest are: vaginitis, thrush, constipation, diarrhea, rectal itching, PMS, depression, fatigue, toenail/fingernail discoloration, and joint pain. It is important to note that candida albicans is always present in the digestive tract and genital tract, however it only becomes a problem when the body’s other beneficial bacteria do not balance its presence or the immune system losses the ability to control its growth. Food allergies, a weakened immune system, taking antibiotics, immuno-suppressive drugs, oral contraceptives, and eating a diet high in refined sugars, can all trigger a candida infection. Pathway Ultra EPA 500

Pathway ULTRA EPA provides 500 mg of EPA and 100 mg of DHA per softgel. This is almost three times the level of EPA found in most omega 3 supplements. EPA has been shown to support healthy cardiovascular function and inflammatory responses within the body and DHA aids in the structural support of cell membranes, which is essential for brain and eye health.  EPA can also help with mood. A 2002 study published in the American journal of psychiatry  found that after only four weeks, six out of ten patients receiving EPA had significantly reduced symtpoms of depression.

Luckily, I had a wonderful support system and doctor who diagnosed me quickly with Postpartum Depression (PPD). PPD goes beyond the blues that many woman experience after giving birth. PPD can last weeks, months and sometimes never really goes away if left untreated.  Continue reading “Tips for the Postpartum Blues”
