Aspartame: What You Should Know

Aspartame also goes by the names Equal, NutraSweet, Spoonful, Equal Measure, AminoSweet, Benevia, NutraTaste, and Canderel and is found in many “diet” sodas, teas, juices, “sugar-free” and “low sugar” products. Aspartame is an ingredient in nearly 6,000 products world-wide! Aspartame is so widely used that you shouldn’t be surprised to find it in many of the products that may be in your kitchen right now. What may surprise you however, is what aspartame is doing to your health.

The safety of aspartame’s usage has been questioned for decades, yet it is still widely used. Despite the data showing aspartame leading to brain tumors in animal studies along with many studies lacking information about the long-term effects of aspartame, the chemical has been permitted in our food supply for decades. As the desire for diet, low calorie and low sugar alternatives has increased, aspartame has found a way into many of the foods, drinks and ingredients we use and choose every day.  Continue reading “Aspartame: What You Should Know”

How to Choose the Best Chocolate for Your Health

chocolate1

All chocolate is not created equal. It all contains some cacao (same as cocoa, by the way), usually the main ingredient, that has taken on “Superfood” status as of late. But variations in quantity and processing may make a significant difference in the health benefit a given cacao-containing food can offer.

A growing body of scientific research supports dark chocolate and cacao for reduced blood pressure, improved blood vessel health, reduced cardiovascular disease risk and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the bitter fermented seeds of the cacao fruit have extremely high antioxidant potency, scoring higher on the ORAC scale by weight than other common superfoods like acai, pomegranate, grapes and blueberries.

Studies have linked the health benefits to a group of bioactive compounds known as flavanols, part of a larger class of phytonutrients called polyphenols (think Resveratrol). Thus, it stands to reason that in order to maximize the health benefits we get from chocolate or cacao, we must maximize the concentration and integrity of the flavanols.

How can we do that? There are two main factors to consider in choosing the best chocolate for your health. Continue reading “How to Choose the Best Chocolate for Your Health”

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables for a Better Mood

Researchers in New Zealand found that people who ate at least seven servings of fruits and vegetables per day felt calmer and more relaxed than those who didn’t. The study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology found a day-to-day relationship between those who reported a higher fruit and vegetable consumption and positive mood.

According to lead author, Dr. Tamlin Connor, “On days when people ate more fruits and vegetables, they reported feeling calmer, happier and more energetic than they normally did.”

To achieve seven fruits and vegetables per day, try filling up half your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal. Besides having a positive effect on your mental outlook, you will also be giving your body fiber for good digestion, antioxidants to help fight cancer causing free radicals, and heart healthy vitamins and minerals.

If you find you are still struggling with this, try adding a greens drink or a berry drink like Berry Fusion to your daily routine.

Fantastic Benefits of Pumpkins

The last few days around our house have been spent carving pumpkins and roasting seeds. Although pumpkins aren’t only for Halloween, many people have at least one hanging around this time of year. Pumpkins are a winter squash and they are chock full of nutrients.

Pumpkins contain a rich supply of beta carotene and alpha carotene. Loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals, you’ll get a mouthful of potassium, magnesium, selenium, and lutein in every bite, plus a good dose of vitamins A, C, and E.

My favorite part is the seeds! By weight, they contain more iron than liver, are rich in omega-3s, and are a good source of protein, making them great for vegan and vegetarian diets.

There are many healthy benefits of pumpkins. Eating pumpkin has been linked to a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes, and its natural anti-inflammatory properties aid in fighting asthma and arthritis. Pumpkin also helps maintain fluid balance, regulate blood pressure, modulate the immune system, and prevent cataracts and arteriosclerosis. A digestive aid, pumpkin soothes the stomach and decreases bloating and flatulence.  Continue reading “Fantastic Benefits of Pumpkins”

Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men

The results of a large study have shown that healthy men who took a multivitamin for at least 10 years decreased their risk of cancer by 8%. It may not seem like a lot, but a decrease is a decrease, and when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, cancer risk reduces even more.

One of the participants who took a placebo, Dr. David Chapin, a 73-year-old gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that although he had “never believed” in vitamins, he might start taking a daily multivitamin now, despite the modest benefit.

“A lot of studies make big news, but when you look at the nitty-gritty, they don’t show all that much,” Chapin said, adding that he recently discovered he had been taking a placebo pill. “This was a very reliable study, it was very well designed and administered, and it went on and on and on.”

When choosing a multivitamin here are some tips. Continue reading “Multivitamin May Reduce Cancer in Men”
