The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans should reflect the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) new recommendations calling for Americans to base their diets on fruits, vegetables, grains and beans, and to cut out red and processed meat.
The new ASC guidelines say that a healthy eating pattern includes a variety of vegetables (including fiber-rich legumes), fruits and whole grains. It does not include red and processed meats. In a new study, vitamin D and omega-3 (fish oil) show promise in prevention of cancer death and heart attacks. The study involved 25,871 people in the U.S., who took part in this 5-year clinical research, VITamin D and OmegA-3 Trial (VITAL). Some participants took only vitamin D or fish oil; others took both; and some acted as the control by consuming neither supplement.

Chemotherapy is the most used treatment method to help fight cancer. This is because it is one of the most effective treatments. However, sometimes chemo doesn’t work. This is mainly because the tumors that develop once chemotherapy has begun start to develop resistance against anticancer drugs, making chemotherapy less effective. Researchers from South Dakota State University have found that two active forms of vitamin D can stop a drug transporter protein, multi-drug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1), which lets the cancer cells become drug resistant.
