Pumpkin Seed – Superfood

It’s pumpkin carving time! So what do you do with all those creamy white pumpkin seeds? Don’t throw them out. Instead, start incorporating them into your meals. Here are some reasons why.

1. Mineral superstar: One cup of pumpkin seeds provides 16% of the recommended daily amount of manganese, 42% of magnesium, 44% of zinc, and 12% of iron. Reserach indicates that all these nutrients may help you sidestep Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, immune dysfunction, and osteoporosis.

2. Protein power: Protein is a part of every cell in the body, and pumpkin seeds are one of the plant world’s best sources of this essential macronutrient. One ounce of these super seeds contain more protein than an ounce of beef or a cup of milk! What’s more, a preliminary animal study suggests that the protein in pumpkin seeds potentially holds unique liver-protective properties.  Continue reading “Pumpkin Seed – Superfood”

Polyethylene Glycol & Propylene Glycol: What Are They & What are They Doing in My Moisturizer?

As a mom, I am very concerned about what I am putting on my children’s skin… whether it be shampoos, diaper creams, or moisturizers. So I thought it would be interesting to take some questionable ingredients commonly found in products we use every day and find out what they do. First up, polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol (PEGs and PPGs).

These ingredients are used in many products as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. They are also popular emulsifiers – helping to mix two products that normally don’t mix together (for example, oil and water). Most cream-based products need some kind of emulsifier in them.

There are all sorts of names for these ingredients and they are used in many products on American shelves, but their safety for use in cosmetics is controversial. There are no restrictions on the use of PEGs in cosmetics in America. In the case of propylene glycol, as with many ingredients in products, it might not be the ingredient itself that is harmful, but process it goes through before it is used in a product that is the problem.  Continue reading “Polyethylene Glycol & Propylene Glycol: What Are They & What are They Doing in My Moisturizer?”

Antioxidant Formulas by Pathway

Debi “the Mojo Coach” wrote a fantastic blog about the importance of antioxidants in your diet. She provided delicious options to help you make the most of these cancer fighting nutrients. Unfortunately, the common American diet doesn’t tend to be filled with fruits and veggies. Personally, I agree with Debi… the best way to get antioxidants is to eat a colorful array of foods, but when that is not possible, supplementing with an antioxidant formula is an option.

Antioxidants protect the body from free radical damage caused by poor dietary habits, exposure to pollution, sun damage, smoking, drinking alcohol, and other lifestyle habits. Adding key antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, alpha lipoic acid, turmeric, and green tea can minimize this type of damage. Antioxidants can be protective and helpful in the following areas: detoxification, healthy cellular growth, brain, eye, skin, and heart health, as well as graceful aging. Antioxidants: Why You Need Them and How to Get Them

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that protect and repair our body’s cells. Free radicals from environmental toxins and our body’s breakdown of processed foods can cause damage to our arteries, immune system and overall health, leading to chronic diseases that many Americans suffer from today. Antioxidants help eliminate these free radicals, boost immunity, and prevent any damage done to our body’s tissues.

Where do they come from?

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is a great way to incorporate antioxidants into a healthy lifestyle! The three main vitamin antioxidants are beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E found in deeply colored fruits and vegetables. It is best to eat most fruits and vegetables raw or lightly steamed to avoid the loss of these beneficial nutrients from heat during cooking.  Continue reading “Antioxidants: Why You Need Them and How to Get Them”

Let There Be Light in the Vegetable Drawer

vegetable drawerWith the excessive use of pesticides and herbicides in commercial agriculture, we might forget that plants actually have their own methods for protecting themselves against pests and harsh environmental stressors. While the protections of our domesticated species may not be as potent as those of their wild ancestors, how else could these plants have survived to see the day they would be coddled by our industrial methods in a sunny California field?

Compounds like resveratrol in grapes, lycopene in tomatoes, anthocyanins in blueberries, sulforophane and glucosinolates in broccoli and other brassica vegetables… they are sun-protecting pigments, insect poisons or off-putting bitter flavors that we’re beginning to realize may have strong antioxidant, anti-cancer and disease-fighting benefits in humans.  Continue reading “Let There Be Light in the Vegetable Drawer”
