One of the reasons was because certain items were damaging to the environment, but another reason is that they can be damaging to you. Many of the items below contain chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other illnesses. And I know it may be difficult to change all of these items right away, but perhaps changing one thing at a time is a tangible goal and could help make your life and home less toxic.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and although many of us know the dangers of the sun, many people still continue to ignore the potentially damaging effects of the sun on our health. The good news is that skin cancer is one on of the most preventable and treatable of cancers. About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 85% of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By raising awareness of the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging sun-safe habits, we can change behaviors and save lives.

Meat Tax Would Prevent 220,000 Deaths

meatMeat taxes global health. So why not have a meat tax? New research shows that a tax on red and processed meat – such as hot dogs, bacon and deli meat – could save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.

Researchers from the University of Oxford estimate that in 2020, global meat consumption will result in $285 billion in health care costs and 2.4 million deaths from heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. But a global meat tax could help prevent 220,000 deaths and decrease health care costs by $41 billion. It would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Philadelphia Flyers Mascot Should Drop the Hot Dogs to Fight Cancer

hot-dogsProfessional sports have some influence over the American public. The Philadelphia Flyers just introduced Gritty, the hockey team’s new hot-dog-loving mascot. Well, I have some news for Gritty: hot dogs don’t love you back. So skip Flyers Dollar Dog Night to protect yourself from colorectal cancer.

Hockey is no place for hot dogs. The World Health Organization says hot dogs and other processed meat – like pepperoni, bacon and deli meat – are “carcinogenic to humans” and major contributors to colorectal cancer. Reduce Cancer Risk With Plant-Based Foods

plant-based-foodsA new major report from the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research recommends emphasizing plant-based foods to reduce cancer risk.

The new report – Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective – analyzed data from 51 million people to create a global blueprint for preventing cancer. The researchers found strong evidence that consuming both red meat and processed meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer. They also found that there is evidence that consumption of dairy products could increase the risk of prostate cancer.
