Small Business Saturday: November 29

PersonalCarearea-crop-sm-aThis year marks the 5th annual Small Business Saturday. There are so many reasons to get out there and support local small businesses. Here are a five:

1. Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

2.Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses put a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.

3. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.

4. There are usually more diversity and options available at a local small business. Sure, the big box chains carry more, but small chains offer items you may never find elsewhere and can even special order items that they don’t usually carry.

5. In my experience, customer service in a small business far exceeds that of any larger chain store. At Village Green Apothecary we strive to make sure that each and every person is taken care of and has the best experience.

So, whether it be Small Business Saturday, any Saturday or any other day of the week, supporting small businesses deserves to be part of your regular routine. Plus – our biggest sale of the year is going on now!

Overfed and Undernourished: You Are What You Eat

drive-thruAccess to nutritionally depleted, technologically created, chemically treated “food” has many of us taking in thousands of empty calories, each and every day, without realizing the cost.

The saying, “you are what you eat” carries a serious measure of truth. If you’re like most people, you’re overfed and undernourished. And when it comes to your weight and overall health, that’s no laughing matter.

It’s so easy to grab prepackaged, convenient vending machine, drive-thru or shelf food – but what price are you really paying for all that “convenience”?

• Larger sized clothing
• Higher medical bills
• Decreased energy and quality of life

Our bodies are designed to eat fresh, natural, whole foods that supply us with an endless variety of vitamins, minerals, fiber and incredible nutrients.

Think about all the many benefits (including better, fresher, more satisfying taste) that healthy foods provide. Is it really worth it to save a few short minutes of your day, pulling through the fast food drive-thru and spending your hard-earned dollars on items that can take even more from you – like your health, youth and energy?

You may not realize it, but here’s what also happens when you eat this way:

• Since foods that don’t nourish you can’t truly satisfy you, you overeat to try to find that satisfaction.

• These are the foods that are the root cause of many illnesses and diseases.  Continue reading “Overfed and Undernourished: You Are What You Eat”

How Daily Choices Impact Your Life: 5 Keys to Healthier Living

daily-choices-questionsMost of us make hundreds of daily choices without much thought as to how they will impact our lives.

• What to wear
• What to eat
• How to relate to other people
• How to care for our bodies, minds and spirits
• How we “show up”
• How we nurture ourselves and those we love… and so much more

Many of these choices are more like habits, and we don’t recognize them as choices because we don’t even realize we’re making them. But by changing how you view your daily choices, you can easily and positively impact your life and health, moving closer toward the life you truly want.

Here are five keys to healthier living that are made possible simply by understanding how your daily choices impact your life.

1) Nutrition / Fitness / Wellness

What daily food choices are you making? Do you usually go for chemicals, toxins, and other unrecognizable substances and ingredients? You’re probably thinking, “Of course not!” But take a closer look. Healthier living starts with what you put into your body and daily choices should include real, whole foods that are rich in nutrients, avoiding those convenient but highly processed foods with no nutrients, just empty calories.  Continue reading “How Daily Choices Impact Your Life: 5 Keys to Healthier Living”

Workplace Stress: 10 Tips for Better Health on the Job

stress-at-workDid you know that workplace stress continues to be the cause of many health issues, including:

• Physical and emotional illnesses
• Chronic conditions and diseases
• Premature aging
• Weight gain
• Digestive issues
• Sleep problems
• Depression… and more

So, if you’re feeling stressed on the job, here are ten tips to help relieve workplace stress for better health.

1. Learn how to say “No”… and mean it! Though it should be a no-brainer, when you’re already overextended, taking on additional tasks only creates more stress and anxiety. Learn to say “No” and mean it, instead of piling more onto your already overextended workload.

2. Make your workspace work for you. Personalizing your workspace with things that calm and soothe you is one of the best (and easiest) ways to create a more peaceful environment on the job. Use pictures of loved ones or photos of serene settings, a calming figurine or inspirational quote placed on your desk, even music playing softly in the background to change your workplace atmosphere. There are also apps you can download with sounds like waterfalls, birds, rain, wind or whatever sounds give provide you with serenity and calm.  Continue reading “Workplace Stress: 10 Tips for Better Health on the Job”
