Let’s Talk About Relationships and Health

friendsWho are you spending your time with? Have you considered the connection between your relationships and health?

If you’re listening to people who are negative, critical, pessimistic and judgmental, can you be surprised when you feel deflated, depleted and uninspired? Notice how you feel once this negativity is dumped on you. Not only does it impact you mentally and emotionally, it impacts you physically too! Negative people or “energy vampires” create stress, which suppresses the immune system. When your immune system is suppressed, you’re not as able to fight off invaders like bacteria, viruses, etc. With a suppressed immune system, you’re less resistant to illness and disease. 10 Life Lessons My Friend Learned That Helped Her Fight Cancer

cathy-lepiane1bI have known Cathy since the 9th grade. A few years ago she was diagnosed with cancer. She wrote the following blog because she felt it was a life lesson that was worth sharing, especially since she was being approached by numerous friends and strangers who wondered how she beat cancer and was able to have a healthy baby after undergoing chemo treatments. Here’s her story in her own words. – Paula

Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage 2 appendix cancer. I was only 37 years old at the time, a mother of 2 young children, a 5-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, and at the peak of my career. Luckily for me, they surgically removed the tumour, but recommended I undergo chemotherapy treatments catered to colon cancer (the most harsh and aggressive therapy) since there were no known treatments for my type of aggressive cancer, and there still may be some cancer cells left behind. When I reached out to cancer organizations to find out more about the type of cancer that I had and what I could do about it, they told me they didn’t have any information for me because it was so rare. Even my oncologist told me that my cancer was a grey area, and they didn’t know if treatments were even going to work for me. 10 Simple Tips to Prevent Holiday Weight Gain

holiday-party-foodThe holidays are here, a time for family, friends… and lots of food. Many of these foods are special to the holidays and we often want to celebrate by enjoying these special sweets and treats. For some, certain holiday foods or desserts bring us right back to the comfortable place where we originally feasted on them. For others, it’s simply a time to put our healthy eating on hold until the New Year.

Is there a way you can enjoy this time of year and still prevent holiday weight gain? Yes! It’s all about preplanning, so here are 10 simple tips for a healthy and weight-gain-free holiday season:

1. Travel Wisely: Will you be traveling? If so, before you leave for your trip, be sure to pack some healthy snacks and drinks. While there may be plenty of fast food and convenience stops along the way, chances are what you pack will be more nutritious and healthier than what you’d find at most rest stops. If you’re traveling by plane, the same idea applies. While you may have access to some healthy choices at an airport restaurant or store, long lines and other last-minute delays may prevent you from having time to get what you need.
