Do You Have Trouble Swallowing Pills?

“My calcium supplement is too big to swallow. Can I open the capsule?” (Or crush it, or cut it in half?) These are common questions that we hear at the pharmacy.

The first thing I ask people is to show me how they are taking their pills. If you are tilting your head back and trying to swallow your vitamins or medications, then you are actually making it harder for yourself because you are narrowing your throat. Take your pills the same way you would eat any food. You don’t throw your head back after taking a bite of sandwich, do you? And make sure that you are chasing them with a large glass of water. Trust me, this will make it a lot easier.

Does the thought of swallowing a “horse pill” still make you gag? Well, there are some things that can be done to make it easier. Continue reading “Do You Have Trouble Swallowing Pills?”

First Aid Kit for Traveling With Kids

We travel a lot. In the summer we head to the cottage every weekend (4 hours away to a remote Northern Ontario location), and we also make annual trips to somewhere warm. With two kids, it is important to have on hand a first aid kit that includes items that you are going to need in case of emergencies. We came to this realization when our oldest cut his hand and we didn’t even have polysporin (and neither did the little market that supplies everything for cottage country). Joe’s hand ended up fine after being washed with clean water and applying polysporin, which we found at a neighbor’s house. Lesson learned: be prepared.

Here is a list of items that I believe every parent/caretaker should have on hand for those moments when a local health food store/pharmacy isn’t available.

Are Drug Companies Hiding The Truth From Us?

This is a very controversial subject and Dr. Oz tried tackling it last Thursday on his show. Pharmaceutical drugs are important and have their place in our world, however, there is no doubt in my mind that many drugs are overused, misused and over-prescribed, and I am not the only one who believes this.  Dr. Oz had expert guests debate drug companies’ role in our everyday life and what they (the companies) are keeping from the public.

According to Dr. Oz, there are 4 secrets that the pharmaceutical industry is hiding:

1. Drug companies underestimate dangerous side effects
2. Drug companies control much of the information that doctors get about a drug
3. People are often prescribed drugs they don’t need
4. Drugs target the symptom, not the cause

Watch below to see more about this controversial subject.

Safe Drug Disposal: National Take Back Initiative

On Saturday April 30, a number of collection sites around the country will be taking back unused and unwanted prescription drugs (including controlled substances) through the National Take Back Initiative. The program helps to keep these substances out of our environment (e.g., water supply), as well as keep them safe from children, teens and adults who might accidentally or intentionally look to use them inappropriately.

This is a great time to go through your medicine cabinet and dispose of your unused and expired drugs! As a reminder, through Village Green’s TakeAway Environmental Return System, you can turn in most traditional pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications (OTC’s) everyday at no cost. (Note: our program does not accept controlled substances.)
