How to Reduce Your Chemical Exposure

I just finished reading Slow Death by Rubber Duck: How The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects Our Health, by Rick Smith. It is a great read, especially if you have kids. The book shows that we are accumulating toxic chemicals in our bodies and in our children’s bodies by using everyday household products that we consider harmless.

The chemicals most discussed in the book are endocrine disruptors. According to the authors, “If toxic chemicals mimic hormones, the chemicals will actually alter what genes get turned on or off at different times.” These toxic chemicals can cross a pregnant woman’s placenta and affect the neurological development, reproductive development, and organ development of her fetus.

Some very positive things have came out of this book, however. Canada banned bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles, and many other companies followed suit by voluntarily taking BPA out of their plastics. Plus, new legislation regarding chemical safety has been changed. In the past, chemicals had to be proven toxic to be removed from use with food products; now, until a chemical can be proven safe, it won’t be allowed. In the United States, it is still a work in progress, but there is promise as states like Massachusetts have banned BPA in baby bottles.

Another endocrine disruptor is a group of chemicals called phthalates, used to make plastics soft and flexible. Continue reading “How to Reduce Your Chemical Exposure”

Herbal Formula Shows Promise for Reducing Breast Cancer Risk

Estrogen plays many important roles in the body. For example, it is necessary for a woman’s menstrual cycle and for reproduction. It also supports cardiovascular and bone health. And, while estrogen is needed for the development of breasts, too much exposure to estrogen can also increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Estrogen can stimulate breast cell division and can support the growth of estrogen-responsive tumors.

Within the body, there are different estrogen metabolites which are known to be either beneficial or harmful. Simple urine tests are available to measure the metabolites and ratios to assess one’s risk. For example, the company Metametrix offers a test that measures the 2-hydroxyestrone (“good” estrogen) to 16-α-hydroxyestrone (“bad” estrogen). The 2:16 ratio can assess a woman’s long-term risk for breast, cervical, and other estrogen-sensitive cancers. Higher concentrations of 2-metabolites and lower concentrations of 16-metabolites may reduce breast cancer risk as well as the risk for other hormonally-related cancers. The good news is that nutritional interventions can promote a healthy 2:16 ratio.

In a recent study involving 47 premenopausal and 49 postmenopausal women, the results indicate that supplementation with an herbal formula may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Continue reading “Herbal Formula Shows Promise for Reducing Breast Cancer Risk”

Water: Hydration and Health

Do you experience headaches, fatigue, muscle pains, constipation, heartburn, anxiety attacks, food intolerances, joint and muscle weakness, dry skin, chapped lips, water retention, digestive problems, or bad breath? If so, you may be suffering from dehydration. Many people are dehydrated and are not even aware of it. Even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function, such as short-term memory, alertness, and concentration. Dehydration can result from simply not drinking enough water, or from drinking fluids such as soda, coffee, or alcohol that rob your body of water. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hot weather, exercising, and illnesses that involves a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea also increase your body’s need for water.

5 Ways to Prevent Dehydration

  1. Carry water with you everywhere you go.
  2. Eat foods that contain a high amount of water, such as fruits, vegetables, soups, and smoothies.
  3. Drink beverages such as milk, low-sugar juices and herbal teas.
  4. Fill water bottles at the start of your day and make sure you drink them by the end of the day.
  5. Drink room-temperature and still water rather than sparkling or ice-cold water. Carbonation and cold temperature make it harder to drink very much water at one time.

Vision and Eye Health

Our eyes are complex sensory organs that contain up to 70% of all of the sensory receptors in the body. Eyes need to be continually nourished with the proper nutrients in order to stay healthy and protected against damage that light and other environmental factors can cause. Both free radical damage and decreased blood flow to the eyes are the main causes for degenerative eye conditions. Recent research has shown that taking antioxidants can slow or stop oxidative damage to the eyes.

Comprehensive Eye Formula

Pathway VISION FORMULA PLUS combines key nutrients and herbs to support healthy vision. Ingredients include Vitaberry® Plus, a trademarked blend of freeze-dried grape seed, wild blueberry, qild bilberry, cranberry, tart cherry, prune, raspberry seed, strawberry, resveratrol, and quercetin, all powerful antioxidants. Lutein and zeaxanthin (both from FloraGLOTM) have been studied for their beneficial role in the health of the macula of the eye. Additional nutrients such as selenium, zinc taurine, and alpha lipoic acid make this formula complete. Bioperine®, a black pepper extract, is added to enhance the absorption of these nutrients. Fluoride Lowers Children’s IQ

A new study pre-published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, shows that exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence. Fluoride is added to 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

More than 500 children aged 8 to 13 from two different towns were studied and tested. One city had fluoridated water, and the other did not.

The results showed that approximately 28% of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8% in the high-fluoride area. In the high-fluoride city, 15% had scores indicating mental retardation, as compared to only 6% in the low-fluoride city.

Fluoride has also been a concern because of fluorosis, a dental condition that can result from consuming too much of the mineral fluoride. It mostly results in tiny white flecks or streaks on teeth. In extreme cases, it causes discoloration and pitting of the tooth enamel. This affects children under the age of 8.

One way to avoid too much fluoride is to read your toothpaste label and limit the amount of toothpaste used by kids under 6. Continue reading “Fluoride Lowers Children’s IQ”
