How to Handle Ear Infections at Home

By the time your child has reached the age of 5, he or she may have already suffered through at least one ear infection. And according to The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), ear infections account for 25 million office visits annually with direct costs for treatment estimated at $3 billion.

Antibiotics are still the most recommended solution to ear infections for children under the age of 1, even though most ear infections are caused by viruses. A study from the Archives of Otolaryngology showed that 88% of children with ear infections never needed antibiotics, and antibiotics did not shorten the lifespan of the illness. Many doctors have started to use a wait and see option for children over the age of 1, basically waiting to see if the ear infection clears up on its own, letting the body’s own immune system do the work in clearing the infection.

Still, as most parents know, ear infections can be painful and we want to protect our children from them as much as possible. If your child has an ear infection, treat the symptoms with the following tips, to help provide relief.

1. Place a warm compress over the infected ear to relieve pain.

2. Gentle massage around the ear may also provide some relief. Continue reading “How to Handle Ear Infections at Home”

Why You Should Take Probiotics

The importance of probiotics has been blogged about many times, but more and more research is showing that these good bacteria may have a hand in preventing and controlling a surprising number of conditions in people of all ages.

Your digestive tract is filled with hundreds of bacteria – some good and some bad. In a normal digestive system, the good and bad bacteria strike a careful balance to keep you healthy. However, a healthy balance can easily become unbalanced with poor food choices, antibiotic use and illness.

Probiotics have shown to be effective in many areas of health, including  prevention of diarrhea caused by radiation treatment, and controlling diarrhea associated with liver cirrhosis and the toxins produced by the bacteria Clostridium difficile, often a side effect of antibiotic therapy. The symptoms of intestinal conditions such as ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome can also be reduced by probiotics. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may be able to boost their babies’ gut immunity by taking probiotics.

Recent research suggests probiotics may also improve the respiratory health of people with cystic fibrosis and of children with allergies and infections. Certain probiotic strains relieve vaginal and urinary tract infections, and some seem to reduce the recurrence of bladder cancer. Pregnant women taking probiotics may also prevent their children from developing eczema. Continue reading “Why You Should Take Probiotics”

Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids

A recent study by researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia shows that feeding your children a healthy diet rather than junk food can result in a higher IQ later in life.

The study, led by Dr. Lisa Smithers, looked at the link between the eating habits of children at 6 months, 15 months and 24 months, and their IQ at 8 years of age.

Researchers studied the dietary patterns of more than 7,000 children during the first two years of life. They compared traditional and contemporary home-prepared food, commercial baby food, breastfeeding, and junk food.

According to Dr. Smithers, “Diet supplies the nutrients needed for the development of brain tissues in the first two years of life, and the aim of this study was to look at what impact diet would have on children’s IQs.”  Continue reading “Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids”

Reversing Type II Diabetes

I have an inspiring story to share about my mom, whom I am very proud of. She was diagnosed with type II diabetes in April 2011 and is currently “diabetes free” due to her hard work and dedication to improving her health. Over the years, there were definite warning signs of a potential diabetes diagnosis. She developed gestational diabetes while pregnant with my sister and had been putting on weight (particularly around her abdomen) for the past few years.

My mom took her diagnosis as a wakeup call. She was determined not to take medication, so she consulted me for diet and supplement recommendations. The first thing we did was revamp her diet and get her eating low glycemic foods, rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, high quality protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. She stopped eating sugar and started preparing all of her meals from scratch. Through her diet changes and daily walks, she lost over 60 pounds and is feeling great. Her energy is better than it has been in years. In addition, her hemoglobin A1c (important blood test used to determine blood sugar control) went from 8.1 to a normal level of 5.3.  And, her cholesterol greatly improved from 237 to 196.

Beyond her dietary changes, my mom has been taking supplements on a regular basis. Continue reading “Reversing Type II Diabetes”

Five Reasons to Shop Local and Organic

Now is the time to support your farmers markets and take advantage of nature’s bounty. Here are some of the reasons why:

1. Saves gas. Produce isn’t being shipped all over the country (or world) to get to your grocery store. Most vendors are with 100 miles of the farmers markets that they attend. Therefore it also cuts down on pollution. The average distance our food travels is 1,500 miles, mostly by air and truck, increasing our dependence on petroleum. By buying locally, you conserve the energy that’s used for transport.

2. Less packaging. You will notice that your household garbage produced from food wrapping/boxes/containers will be greatly reduced.

3. Freshness and peak flavor. When you buy closer to home, it just plain tastes better and you feel a connection with the local organic farmers. Plus it’s more nutritious, since local produce is sold right after it’s picked.  Continue reading “Five Reasons to Shop Local and Organic”
