Are You Hanging Onto Your “Fat Clothes”?

Are your hanging onto your “fat clothes?”

Let’s say you lost some weight, and let’s say you’ve done this in the past where you’ve lost and then you’ve gained it back, lost and gained, lost and gained, etc. You have a variety of sizes to choose from in your closet, that you go to depending on where you are on your journey towards finding a healthy and comfortable weight.

While it’s not making you happy, this yo-yo cycling may be something that’s become unfortunately… very familiar.

Now let’s imagine that, as it’s happened before, life throws you a curveball and you let go of some of your new healthy habits. You notice that the weight starts to creep back up again. Sure, you’re not happy with the weight gain, but there’s a slight sense of relief because while the size you’ve been wearing is too tight, you know that when the weight creeps up, no worries, you have that bigger size in your closet to go back to for just this reason.  Continue reading “Are You Hanging Onto Your “Fat Clothes”?”

Big Diet Data is Coming… Will You Listen?

Have you ever kept a diet diary, writing down in detail every morsel of food you eat? What about an exercise log, tracking your workouts and fitness progress?

These methods have been used as assessment and diagnostic tools for years by nutritionists and trainers. In addition to being valuable for professionals, food and exercise logging can be a great way to raise personal awareness of your own habits, identifying how frequently you actually get outside for a run, or just how many cookies you consume over an entire day of having just one here and there.

The world of technology and apps has revolutionized this traditionally tedious process. Continue reading “Big Diet Data is Coming… Will You Listen?”

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): The “No Time to Exercise” Excuse Buster

High-intensity interval training is a great way to quickly fit in a day’s workout. HIIT is defined as alternations between time periods of less intense activity, and shorter duration, 100% effort, intense bursts of activity. This switch-up makes your body work harder and burn more calories faster than at a constant, mediocre pace. These maximum capacity intervals provide many health benefits. Just take a look at fit, healthy kids. They’re exerting themselves then recovering, unknowingly doing a variation of HIIT as they play!

Benefits of HIIT training stretch far and wide, including:

Efficiency. YES, you can benefit your body in 20 minutes rather than 45 minutes to an hour! Research shows 15-20 minutes of HIIT can help you better achieve your weight and fitness goals than an hour on the treadmill or elliptical. According to a study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, “Just 2 weeks of high-intensity intervals improves your aerobic capacity as much as 6 to 8 weeks of endurance training.”  Continue reading “HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): The “No Time to Exercise” Excuse Buster”

Is Your Cardio Routine Making You Fat?

Are you pushing yourself in the gym, only to find your weight remains stubborn and your energy levels remain low? The amount and kind of exercise you’re doing may be harmful, rather than helpful to your health, fitness and weight goals.

Certain types of exercises like nature walks, hiking, cycling, interval training, strength training, yoga and Pilates can help balance the body’s metabolic needs and have many benefits, including increased blood and oxygen flow to muscles, increased muscle mitochondria (the energy-making powerhouse of cells) and increased fat-burning enzymes. Interval training, or bursts of high-intensity activity, can increase muscle fiber strength, work ability, muscle mitochondria, insulin sensitivity and natural growth hormone. These health benefits sound great right?!

On the other hand, long cardio workouts can often lead to overtraining which depletes your body over time. Continue reading “Is Your Cardio Routine Making You Fat?”
