Simple Ways to Support Female Reproductive Health

Eat well – make sure you have a varied diet, with good fats (omega -3 rich, as in flax and fish oils) and lots of color! It’s especially important to support your liver with lots of dark leafy greens, fiber and liver-supportive herbs. It’s your liver’s job to process all of your hormones and if it’s sluggish, hormone levels can be imbalanced.

  • Consider taking a multivitamin-mineral supplement. Our diets, no matter how good, may not be supplying all that we need. Calcium and magnesium are especially important, but all the antioxidant vitamins and minerals, as well as trace minerals, are also vital.

Taxing Soda: Good idea?

In an effort to decrease the consumption of soft drinks and other such sugary drinks, a proposed soda tax is in the works.  The idea is that these types of empty calorie beverages provide nothing beneficial health-wise and can lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, all huge problems in the United States.   So do you think that paying more for a soft drink will curb people’s love for those fizzy, sweet beverages?  Will people start switching to water and fruit juices instead? Here is a clip from the Today Show about the new Soda  Tax.

What Should I Eat?

For many people trying to improve their diets, it can be maddening trying to understand what constitutes a healthy diet. Low fat? Sugar Free? No Cholesterol? High protein? Fad diets offer confusion and misguidance. To make matters worse, everywhere we go, we are inundated with refined, packaged and processed foods. While these options make life easy, they are also making us unhealthy. These foods lack nutrients and can harm the body with unnatural ingredients.

The only answer to the question what to eat, is real food. “Real” means food in its original form; plant foods in their natural state, and animal products from animals in their natural environments, eating their natural diets.  Real food is nutrient-dense food that provides the body with maximum benefit. Eating whole foods is a balanced way of eating that promotes lifelong health. Real / whole foods are free of processing additives such as preservatives, food dyes, flavorings, solvents, and other harmful substances. Continue reading “What Should I Eat?”

How Eczema Changed My Life … For the Better

I took an interesting path to becoming a nutrition counselor at Village Green Apothecary. My story may help others who are suffering from health problems that conventional doctors are unable to help.

About 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with severe eczema. I had rashes all over my body, from head to toe. I wore long-sleeve shirts to cover my rashes, and people would still ask me if I had burned my hands and how it had happened. Every day I suffered from pain, itchiness, headaches, and severe fatigue. Seeing one dermatologist was not enough to take care of my problem, so I decided to consult another dermatologist in the area. I gave up after seeing 6 different dermatologists, who just prescribed different strengths of cortisone cream. I asked each of those doctors if I could take anything internally to help my painful eczema. I was told there was no such thing and got a look as if I were crazy to ask such a question.

Cortisone cream was helpful at first, but as my eczema got worse, nothing would really help. Cortisone definitely wasn’t the long-term solution. Finally, I took a nutrition class at my local community college. It was a very comprehensive class on the basics of nutrition, healthy eating, exercising, and managing stress. One day after class, I asked my professor if she knew of anything I could do nutritionally to ease my eczema. At first I thought she was going to call me crazy too, but instead she asked me questions about my diet and lifestyle. Then, surprisingly enough, she said the only way I would get better would be to take certain supplements that my body seemed to be deficient in, due to my poor diet.

Water: Miracle Cure?

One of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy from the inside, out is to drink clean, uncontaminated water every day. Water is such a critical component of our health and physiology that if the body doesn’t get enough of it, on a regular basis, damage can occur to tissues, bones, muscles, and blood vessels and can eventually lead to such chronic diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Did you know 75% of your brain and 25% of your bones are made up of water? Drinking water is also the most natural and healthy way to lose weight, burn fat, and suppress your appetite. By drinking 8 glasses of water daily, you can assist your liver in burning stored fat as energy and help your kidneys get rid of excess toxins in your body. This is considered the healthiest way of losing weight: you get to keep your lean muscle mass and get rid of the stored fat. Continue reading “Water: Miracle Cure?”
