EWG’s Sunscreen Guide for 2015

DSC01707Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a sunscreen guide, rating many brands of sunscreens from 0 to 10. This is known as the ingredient hazard score, and reflects known and suspected hazards of ingredients. The safest, most effective products are rated 0 to 2. Products that are rated 3 to 6 have moderate hazardous to health, and from 7 to 10 are considered high hazards to health.

When it comes to my children, I am particularly careful about sunscreen. I need it to be safe, effective and easy to put on. And although spray sunscreens seem very convenient, they should be avoided, especially for children as they may pose serious inhalation risks, and they make it too easy to apply too little or miss a spot. It is no secret that I am a fan of the Badger brand for my children. I can clearly see where I have missed a spot, and it keeps the fairest of my children from burning.

So check out where your sunscreen rates, and visit Village Green Apothecary for more safe sunscreens.

Enjoy the summer!

3 Steps for Spring Skin Care

skin-scrubEveryone wants soft, smooth skin, but unfortunately, our biggest organ usually gets neglected over the winter. Spring is the perfect time to refresh our skin.

Here are some spring skin care steps to help you get ready for flip-flop and T-shirt season.

1. Cleanse: No matter how exhausted you are at the end of the day, make sure that you wash your face and remove any dirt or make-up. Pick a cleanser that is gentle and effective, but most importantly, works with your skin type. For dry, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, or aging skin, there are face and body washes that will fit your needs.

2. Exfoliate: Removing the dead skin cells sitting on the top layer of skin by dry brushing, or even just using a washcloth, is an important step in achieving glowing skin. It is important to be very gentle to avoid damaging your skin. For your face, look for gentle scrubs like MyChelle Fruit Enzyme Scrub. It gently polishes the skin using jojoba beads and refined bamboo stem. Fruit enzymes further dissolve away dulling residue for ultra-smooth, ultra-soft skin. And don’t forget your lips. My daughter made me a homemade lip exfoliator with coconut oil and cane sugar – simple and effective! Continue reading “3 Steps for Spring Skin Care”

Weleda Skin Food

skinfoodThe end of Village Green Apothecary’s Earth Day sale on personal care products is fast approaching – tomorrow to be exact. So if you haven’t taken advantage of the 25% off regular price, you still have time to do it now!

A personal favorite is Weleda Skin Food. This cream enjoys a cult following. It is written up as a constant favorite beauty product for one simple reason – it works. It is a rich, intensely hydrating cream that cares for the skin. It is made with pure lanolin and organic pansy, which nourishes and soothes dry and damaged skin. A precious essential oil blend of lavender, rosemary and sweet orange oil refresh the skin and the senses. Apply this whole body cream to your skin anytime, with special attention to extra dry areas such as hands, feet and elbows. I have very dry skin, and I even apply it to my face.

And although what makes Skin Food popular is that it really works, it is also a clean product. All of Weleda’s natural skin care and baby products are natural, made with Biodynamic and organic ingredients for your health and well being. Their products are made without pesticides or chemicals. They have been at this for over 90 years, so they know a thing or two about natural beauty and taking care of the world we live in.
