New Guidelines for Sinus Infections: NO ANTIBIOTICS

New guidelines by the Infectious Diseases Sociey of America (IDSA) say that treating sinus infections with antibiotics (standard practice in the US ) won’t help most cases and may actually do more harm.

According to the IDSA, sinus infections are the fifth leading reason for antibiotic prescriptions, but as many as 98% are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not and cannot treat viruses. Because there is no easy way to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial, many doctors prescribe antibiotics… just in case. The problem with this is that since most infections aren’t bacterial, the antibiotics won’t help and can actually increase antibiotic resistance.

If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from sinus infections every year, there are options that can help ease your symptoms. Check out the Sinus Survivial Program by Dr. Rob Ivker. His protocol has helped many people who have suffered for years. Through diet, nasal irrigation and supplements, you can finally have relief from sinus congestion and infections.

“Quick Fix” for Occasional Sinus Problems

I suffered through my first sinus infection over the holidays. Not my first one of the year, but my first one ever! I have to say, I am not sure how chronic sufferers put up with the constant pain and sniffling, and the countless boxes of tissues. It was made worse because, like most moms, there wasn’t any “down time.” With two small children at home, I needed to find relief, and fast.

My first step was to head to the doctor, where the diagnosis was confirmed. Next she wrote a script for a 10-day course of antibiotics and she sent me on my way. Personally, I was hoping for a little more guidance. So, I followed this procedure for nasal congestion. It did help somewhat, but I needed something more, and this is when I became a true believer of the Sinus Survival Program designed by Dr. Rob Ivker. Since this was my first sinus infection and I don’t normally have this problem, I signed up for the Free Silver Program and followed the instructions exactly. The program offers a “quick fix” protocol that includes steam inhalants, nasal irrigator (more on this later), as well as supplements.

One week later, and I am symptom free. My husband who was also starting to show symptoms of infection, started the same protocol, and he could not believe how much better he felt in such a short amount of time.

If you suffer from an occasional sinus infection, then following this “quick fix” is a great way to get relief quickly.

Natural Congestion Relief

Now that we have entered cold and flu season, I often get asked what one can do to help loosen chest congestion and relieve coughs. Two of my favorite herbal products that are best taken together are Pathway Congest-Eeze and Pathway Ginger Zinger Cough Syrup. I recommend taking them at the first sign of chest discomfort. Herbs such as echinacea, garlic, thyme, licorice, wild cherry bark, ginger, and oregano oil all work in combination to support upper respiratory health and immunity.

In addition, I also highly recommend doing steam inhalations. The combination of steam and essential oils provides decongesting and antiseptic support for the respiratory passages. Inhalations also direct warm, moist air to the nose, sinuses, throat, and lungs and can help to thin and loosen infected mucus, which is very soothing to dry and irritated mucus membranes. Steam inhalations are great for both kids and adults.

Doing a steam inhalation is easy. Some people prefer using a portable device, such as the Sinus Survival Steam Inhaler. Or, you can also make a steam inhalation by heating a large pot of water until it steams. Then, carefully pour the hot water into a bowl and add 3-5 drops of an essential oil such as peppermint, tea tree, pine, rosemary, or eucalyptus. Place your head about 12 inches above the bowl and cover your head with a towel in such a way that the sides are totally closed and you form a tent over the bowl. Keep your eyes shut and breathe in deeply for about 5-10 minutes.

Avoid the Allergy-to-Sinus Infection Cycle (And Feel Great This Summer!)

Dry, polluted air, mixed with pollens and all of the airborne particles
during the summer months can irritate and inflame the mucous membrane. This inflammation creates headaches, pain and pressure along with many other symptoms. It also will handcuff the cilia. What are cilia? Think of cilia as thousands of waving, microscopic hairs lining your sinuses (mucous membrane). The cilia’s function is to sweep unwanted debris from your mucous membrane. With irritants and unwanted particles, there is a heavier production of mucous. With more mucous production and all of the side effects that histamine produces, the cilia can become clogged. Before long, your sinuses become a stagnant cesspool – which turns into a sinus infection.

Many who suffer from allergies also develop a sinus infection during the summer. Continue reading “Avoid the Allergy-to-Sinus Infection Cycle (And Feel Great This Summer!)”
