Meat Tax Would Prevent 220,000 Deaths

meatMeat taxes global health. So why not have a meat tax? New research shows that a tax on red and processed meat – such as hot dogs, bacon and deli meat – could save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.

Researchers from the University of Oxford estimate that in 2020, global meat consumption will result in $285 billion in health care costs and 2.4 million deaths from heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. But a global meat tax could help prevent 220,000 deaths and decrease health care costs by $41 billion. It would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Well, I have some news for Gritty: hot dogs don’t love you back. So skip Flyers Dollar Dog Night to protect yourself from colorectal cancer.

Hockey is no place for hot dogs. The World Health Organization says hot dogs and other processed meat – like pepperoni, bacon and deli meat – are “carcinogenic to humans” and major contributors to colorectal cancer. New York City Schools Could Become First to Ban Processed Meat

sausage-egg-cheeseExciting news from New York: Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and Council Member Fernando Cabrera have just introduced a resolution to the New York City Council that would remove processed meat from the city’s school lunches.

The landmark resolution cites a 2015 report from the World Health Organization that declared processed meat, such as hot dogs, pepperoni, bacon, sausage and deli meat, carcinogenic to humans.
