Vegan Diet Could Cut Holiday Heart Attack Risk

vegan lasagne aExcessive eating this Christmas – and for many that means loading up on eggnog, cheese plates, ham, roast beef, and turkey – could lead to a holiday heart attack, according to a new study.

Swedish researchers found that heart attack risk increased by 37% on Christmas eve and 15% on Christmas day. This was compared to the 2 weeks before and after Christmas, and was possibly due in part to overeating. People with type 2 diabetes and heart disease were at greater risk – that’s more than 120 million Americans.

New Studies: Fish Oil Reduces Heart Attacks

fish oilTwo studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have found that healthy people who eat fish with omega-3s or take fish oil supplements suffer fewer heart attacks than people who do not have omega-3s in their diet.

One study called The Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL) found that healthy people who took a fish oil supplement suffered fewer heart attacks, particularly if they were African American or did not regularly eat fish. Study: Good Sleeping Habits for a Strong Heart and Good Metabolism

sleeping-habitsA new study published in the journal Scientific Reports has found that good sleeping habits are important for heart health, as well as optimal metabolism. The study looked at sleeping patterns of 2,000 adults between the ages of 54 and 93 and found that those with irregular bedtimes tended to have a higher body mass index, higher blood sugar levels, higher blood pressure, and were more likely to have a heart attack or stroke in the following decade than individuals with regular sleeping patterns.
