Is the Paleo Diet Right For You?

Have you heard of the Paleo diet? It seems like a new diet craze pops up every few years, so how are you supposed to know if this one is right for you? We’ll give you the skinny on the Paleolithic diet: what you can eat, what you can’t, the pros, and the cons, so you can determine if this diet suits your healthy lifestyle and is worth trying.

What is the Paleo Diet?

This diet mimics the daily food intake of men and women during the Paleolithic era (or Stone Age). According to Dr. Loren Cordain, founder of the diet, cavemen were free from diseases that plague Westerners today, due to their intake of simple, unprocessed, whole foods; by changing our eating habits, we too, can repel illness, inflammation, and sluggishness—all while getting svelte in the process!  Continue reading “Is the Paleo Diet Right For You?”

Why is Green Living Important?

There are plenty of reasons offered for going green. But I just want to focus here on three of them. I think all three are very good reasons: one is environmental, one is geo-political/patriotic, and the last is very practical

1) Living green is the right thing to do. Conserving energy resources that we know are finite (oil and gas supplies, etc.) will help to create a world in which most of our energy supply comes from renewable sources. Further, bringing those renewable supplies roughly in balance with energy demand will create a far more sustainable world. At that point, we no longer need to extract and burn fossil fuels because we are relying on renewable sources

2) Making the country more energy independent and reducing the need to import energy, especially fossil fuels from abroad, will help us eliminate our dependence on energy sources that are unstable or unfriendly. Continue reading “Why is Green Living Important?”

Energy Needs for China – The Dragon Needs to Slay Its Dependence on Coal

You have probably read that China has energy production problems. The problem with China’s energy problems is that they cause problems for the rest of the world.

Here is an incident that perfectly exemplifies why China must improve its energy generation capabilities, and in particular, to develop alternative energy sources that are not dependent on coal. In August 2010 there was a 9-day traffic jam on a highway between Inner Mongolia and Beijing. Nine days! Why? Because trucks carrying coal to Beijing’s power plants blocked a road that was already somewhat restricted in traffic capacity due to road work. Unfortunately, without all that coal, Beijing would not be able to keep the lights on. Coal is currently used to produce about 70% of China’s electricity needs, and unfortunately that percentage is likely to increase in the future, not decrease. China is starting-up a new coal-fired power plant every week. Continue reading “Energy Needs for China – The Dragon Needs to Slay Its Dependence on Coal”

5 Common Energy Zappers

Do you experience daily energy slumps? Need caffeine or sugar to get you through your day? If so, read the list below to see if you are falling victim to the five most common energy zappers. Identifying and addressing unhealthy habits is the first step towards feeling your best.

1.    Poor Food Choices

Sugar, caffeine, skipping meals, or eating very heavy meals can affect energy levels and the ability to focus. Sugar and caffeine are stimulants that can disrupt blood sugar levels, interfere with sleep, and lead to exhaustion and burnout. Eating a high-quality diet with enough protein and plenty of fruits and vegetables contributes to better overall health and improved ability to concentrate.

2.    Lack of Exercise
Lack of exercise is associated with numerous health risks. Regular physical activity increases blood flow and oxygenation of cells, which is especially important for the brain. Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity a day can improve mood and energy.

3.    Dehydration
Dehydration reduces blood volume so less blood flows to vital organs and body parts. Dehydration of tissues slows enzymatic activity, and enzymes are vital for the production of energy. Continue reading “5 Common Energy Zappers”
