Two Important Tests for GI Health Offered Through Village Green

gi-health-2As a nutritionist, I answer a lot of questions about a variety of different health challenges. But, the body system that seems to bring the most people to Village Green searching for natural solutions is the digestive system. Uncomfortable symptoms such as indigestion, abdominal pain, heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea can be debilitating. And, many of the over-the-counter and prescription medications can act as bandaids and do not fix the underlying issues.

More and more evidence is showing that GI function and the gut microbiome are critical for optimal health and play a role in so many conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, autoimmune diseases and autism. Therefore, in my opinion, healing the digestive system truly is the place to start when dealing with any health concern, not just GI complaints. Tests for GI health can be very useful. Nutrients to Support Digestive Health

Perma Plus combines four key nutrients to help strengthen the integrity of the intestinal wall and enhance the digestive process.

L-Glutamine  is the most abundant amino acid in the human body, where it functions as a major fuel source. Glutamine also is important for the health of the intestinal wall, protecting against bacterial translocation and promoting healing. Glutamine is stored in muscle tissue in order to meet the needs of other body tissues and inhibits muscle atrophy induced by stress hormones.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine (NAG) is a major component of mucopolysaccharides and as such is a key component in connective tissue. The gut and gastric epithelium (especially the glycocalyx) contain high concentrations of mucopolysaccharides, which help provide structural integrity in the intestinal wall. NAG has been shown to accelerate wound healing.

Aloe Vera extract contains polysaccharides and other substances that stimulate tissue growth and repair processes, reduce inflammation, inhibit pathogens, and strengthen immune function. Fructo-Oligosaccharides (FOS) enhance the growth of healthy bacteria that are necessary for digestive processes.

Digestive Enzymes – The Key to Digestive Health

Ideal digestive function is at the core of good health. Not only does our digestive system break down and absorb nutrients, but it also houses 60-70% of the immune system. Digestive complaints such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, gas, bloating, and reflux, are each important symptoms that should be examined for the root cause. If not resolved, digestive problems can lead to the development of serious health conditions. Fortunately, there are things that you can do help with your digestive health.

Digestive enzymes are necessary for digestion and absorption of food. Adding more enzymes to your diet is beneficial due to the destruction of enzymes in the cooking and/or processing of foods. Enzyme deficiencies can result in poor absorption and other health problems. Pathway DIGASE contains the full complement of enzymes complemented by gentian root, caraway seed, and ginger root to support digestion. This unique product is formulated to provide as much as 80% of the digestive elements needed for the typical meal.

Check out this video by Registered Dietitian Natalie Butler about the cause of enzyme depletion and what can be done to improve digestive health.  Around the 6 minute mark, she discusses supplemental enzymes and her personal experience with irritable bowel syndrome and enzymes.
