Where Weight Loss Goes Wrong

There is no shortage of diet books, weight loss programs, shake diets, cleanse protocols, exercise plans and DVD box sets selling the answer to your weight loss goals. The promise of shedding those extra pounds you’re carrying around, and doing it fast, is something that cannot be ignored.

But those pounds that have been added on gradually over 10 years, 20 years or even 30 at a rate of maybe a few pounds per year… they don’t want to come off so fast.  Annoyingly enough, slow and steady wins the race here too.

But there’s another issue here. The diet plans themselves. They may be effective at promoting weight loss. I can’t argue that. They may even tout dietary and lifestyle habits that are actually good for you long-term! Go figure. But as long as we’re following a plan, a “diet,” we’re often not actually learning and building long-term habits.  Continue reading “Where Weight Loss Goes Wrong”

Why Do We Do It If We Know It’s Bad For Our Health?

It seems like most of America is on a diet or has ambitions to lose weight by calorie reduction at any given time. We are naturally attracted to labels that say “zero calories,” “low calories,” or “no sugar added.” We are naturally interested in products that give us fast and easy results. Marketers often capitalize on our desire to lose excess weight by promoting the sale of  “diet” foods and drinks that are often filled with artificial sweeteners.

Think about it. We’re bombarded with messages like: “lose weight and calories while still satisfying your sweet tooth.” We hear phrases like “empty pleasures” or “cheat on your sugar” to grab the attention of anyone hoping to lose a few pounds. The market has convinced millions of people to purchase artificially sweetened products, whether they’re already in the products we choose, or something we can easily add to our favorite foods and drinks. Just go to a coffee shop, restaurant or supermarket and you’ll find artificial sweeteners at the counters or on the shelves. They’re everywhere. Natural Protocols for Pain Management

Millions of Americans suffer from pain, making it one of the primary reasons people seek medical attention. The conventional approach to pain management often involves medications that carry many side effects and risks, such as GI upset, addiction, and impaired physical and mental functioning. Fortunately, there are natural options that can be very effective and have little to no adverse effects.

The foods you eat have the ability to trigger either pro-inflammatory chemicals or anti-inflammatory chemicals. Pro-inflammatory foods increase pain, swelling, and cellular damage. An increase in inflammatory chemicals has been associated with most chronic diseases including arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and various cancers. Anti-inflammatory foods are health promoting and protective to the body. Continue reading “Natural Protocols for Pain Management”

Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids

A recent study by researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia shows that feeding your children a healthy diet rather than junk food can result in a higher IQ later in life.

The study, led by Dr. Lisa Smithers, looked at the link between the eating habits of children at 6 months, 15 months and 24 months, and their IQ at 8 years of age.

Researchers studied the dietary patterns of more than 7,000 children during the first two years of life. They compared traditional and contemporary home-prepared food, commercial baby food, breastfeeding, and junk food.

According to Dr. Smithers, “Diet supplies the nutrients needed for the development of brain tissues in the first two years of life, and the aim of this study was to look at what impact diet would have on children’s IQs.”  Continue reading “Smart Food Choices Makes For Smarter Kids”

Finding and Fixing the Holes in Your Wellness Plan (Part 1)

Why is it that we may eat well, exercise and still struggle with our weight and health?

For many of us, making healthier food choices is a way of life. We read labels, we’re mindful of our portions, we limit the amount of sugar, junk and processed foods we eat, we limit our alcohol intake and we make a concerted effort to eat “clean” and healthy.

Many of us also commit to a consistent fitness schedule where we’re walking, running, doing classes, DVD’s, yoga, or organized sports regularly. We put in the time and effort necessary to create a lean, toned and fit body.

So with this kind of effort, why aren’t many of us looking, feeling and living our best?

While eating and exercise are huge steps in the right direction, they’re only a piece of the wellness puzzle. Continue reading “Finding and Fixing the Holes in Your Wellness Plan (Part 1)”
