Music is a Natural Antidepressant

music-listeningMusic has transformative powers. For centuries people have used music to express themselves and lift their spirits. The great news is that music still holds its miraculous mystique.

Research has shown that music releases neurotransmitters, chemicals that are released from nerve endings which actually “transmit” signals, via amino acids, from one nerve ending to another. So imagine dominoes – once one is kicked-off, the others follow. Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters that ignites the reward and pleasure centers of our brain, and the right song can give your body a dose. And as such, music is a natural antidepressant.

You know how you need a good cry every once in a while? Sad music can help release sad emotions, getting them up and out. Many of us can all relate to a great “break-up” song that allowed us to mourn the loss of a love through those free-flowing tears. And there’s nothing wrong with that – just be sure not to use the sad music to stay in that place for too long. Continue reading “Music is a Natural Antidepressant”

Health Benefits of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

lavender-fieldThe health benefits of essential oils are many, including aromatherapy, which is the use of essential oils from plants to promote a feeling of well-being. Although scent is a key component in the use of essential oils, some of them can also be applied directly to the skin for use in healing or in a massage, or used for other direct health benefits.

Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds or blossoms of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients, and this mix determines what the oil is used for. Some oils are used to promote physical healing – for example, to treat swelling or fungal infections. Continue reading “Health Benefits of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy”

Heart Health and Positivity

IMG_4209Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that about 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease (CVD) each day. This is an average of one death every 39 seconds. Stroke causes about one of every 18 U.S. deaths.

Diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and medicine are the usual recommendations to ward off or treat heart disease. But more and more research shows that heart health and positivity are linked and that having a good attitude can go a long way toward reducing your risk of heart attacks and stroke. Resolution Series: Weight Management with Supplements

weigh-inThe number one resolution for Americans is weight loss. Despite hundreds of fad diets and weight loss programs that promise quick and long-lasting results, more than half of American adults are still overweight or obese.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 billion adults are overweight, with a body mass index (BMI) above 25. With nearly 500 million individuals ranking as truly obese (BMI above 30), obesity continues to represent a major risk factor for the development of serious medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Resolution Series: Weight Management with Diet

healthy-foodMany people hit the gym in the New Year ready to shed the pounds, and although exercise is an important piece of weight management, the true key to weight loss is what you eat.

The concept of “a calorie is a calorie” is worth taking a look at. Many people have the perception that weight loss equals calories burned minus calories consumed. And that may work in the short term, but if you are looking for long-term results, the source of the calories is important. After all, eating 1,200 calories of junk or processed food yields very different results compared to eating 1,200 calories of balanced nutrition. Here are some important aspects to consider.
