Garlic: Wonder Food and Wonderful Price

A month ago I wrote about garlic and the immune system. Well,  Village Green Apothecary is offering Pathway One-a-Day Garlic at 35% off while supplies last.  This is your time to stock up on this immune-boosting supplement. The premium quality Chinese garlic cloves used in Pathway One-a-Day Garlic are naturally grown, hand peeled, and processed to preserve allicin, the key component responsible for garlic’s cardiovascular benefits. An enteric coating is applied to each tablet in order to prevent odor. Each tablet provides a minimum of 6,000 mcg of total allicin potential and all of the natural compounds normally provided by fresh garlic cloves.

Support Your Immune System: Zinc

According to Earl Mindell in his book Vitamin Bible, “Zinc acts like a traffic policeman, directing and overseeing the efficient flow of body processes (and) the maintenance of enzyme systems and cells.” So basically, it is involved in most bodily functions.

Zinc is a regulator of the immune system, ensuring that cells for identifying and killing microbes, viruses and cancerous cells are in good working order. Zinc also speeds wound healing and is used for the healing of burns and surgical incisions.

Studies have shown that zinc can protect against flu and colds. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, seniors who took 45mg of zinc had fewer infections than those who took a placebo.

Just be careful – zinc can interfere with the absorption of copper in the long term. So if you are taking zinc for longer than a month, make sure to take 2 to 3 mg of copper a day.

“D” Public Service Announcement

Are you getting enough Vitamin D3? Have you checked your level? This is done with a simple blood test called 25(OH)D, however, this test is not part of routine exams so you specifically have to ask your doctor for it. Keep in mind that you want your level to be somewhere between 50 and 70, and that if you are at 30 or below, you are seriously deficient and should consider taking an extra high dose for a few weeks. I went through this myself and coach my clients on how to do it, as well.

For some of us, winter is around the corner and we want to be prepared in order to avoid toxic flu shots. But the truth is, no matter where we live, having sufficient stores of vitamin D is something we must always be in control of. Amongst other benefits, this important vitamin builds up our immune system and gives us an overall sense of well-being.

The research being done on vitamin D within the past 5 years is yielding more and more results with regard to its benefits. Unfortunately, more often than not, doctors are not up-to- date with the new information and continue to make recommendations as low as 400IU to 1000IU per day. Support Your Immune System: Fish and Flax

Omega-3 fatty acids are good for almost every aspect of health. Abundant in cold water fish, it can also be found in flax and walnuts. Clinical studies have shown that omega-3s are especially supportive of healthy immune system function. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and help modulate the immune system. This means that people with Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, lupus, and colitis may benefit from a daily dose of this essential fatty acid.

If you have a hard time squeezing walnuts and flaxseeds into your diet, and if you aren’t a big fan of sardines and mackerel, an over-the-counter supplement may be what you need. The British Journal of Nutrition reported that doses as low as 600mg per day had a positive effect on the immune function of elderly subjects.  Most people can benefit from taking 1000mg per day. There are fish oil and flax sources available, for those who want a vegetarian version.

Love Your Liver

Your liver takes a lot of abuse. As a major organ of detoxification in the body, it must be able to process thousands of chemicals from food, your body, the environment, medications, and chemicals released from infectious organisms. Poor diet, overeating, excessive intake of fats, sugars, alcohol, and environmental agents can all negatively affect liver health. Your life depends on the liver’s role in protecting your body from toxin build-up. If the liver isn’t functioning optimally, then there is a greater chance of cellular damage throughout the body. Are you taking care of your liver?

Three important ways to optimize liver function:

1) Protect your liver cells with the herb milk thistle, phosphatidylcholine, and antioxidants such as vitamin A, E, C, beta-carotene and selenium.

2) Improve bile flow by eating bitter foods (endive, chicory, radicchio, mustard greens, dandelion leaf/root) and herbs (gentian, artichoke leaves, hops, barberry).

3) Improve detoxification by eating garlic and cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, etc.), eating protein (supplies important amino acids needed to bind toxic materials), and getting adequate amounts of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and zinc, which are essential components of many enzymes needed for detoxification.

Three Pathway supplements designed to support liver health: Continue reading “Love Your Liver”
