Supplements and Surgery

If you are about to have surgery, you have most likely been instructed to discontinue all supplementation about 2 weeks prior to surgery. In many cases, this has to do with the blood thinning effects that a number of plant-based medicines possess. Herbs like ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginger, St. John’s wort, willow bark, clove, bromelain, turmeric, angelica root, arnica, anise, celery, horse chestnut, parsley, devils’ claw, dong quai, capsicum, danshen, chamomile, feverfew, passionflower, papain, red clover and ginseng all have some blood thinning effects. Even vitamin E should be used with caution prior to surgery, as should high consumption of green tea.

The blood thinning side effects of certain supplements are not the only reason for caution when talking pre- and post-surgery protocols. If anesthesia is being used, one needs to use caution with such herbs as kava kava and valerian. Continue reading “Supplements and Surgery”

Take Care of Cold Sores Naturally

Anyone who has ever had a cold sore knows they can be as embarrassing as they are uncomfortable. A contagious infection caused by the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), cold sores are fluid-filled lesions that can last for a week or longer.

Cold sores usually appear near the mouth: on the lips, chin, and cheeks. Sometimes they show up in the nostrils or on the roof of the mouth or the gums.

Signs and symptoms may not show up for 1 to 3 weeks after exposure to the HSV and include:

  • Small, fluid-filled red blisters, usually near the mouth
  • Pain, tingling, or burning around the mouth or nose before a blister appears
  • Itching or sensitivity at the site before a cold sore appears
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Oozing blisters, which then form a yellow crust that eventually sloughs off to reveal pink skin underneath.  Continue reading “Take Care of Cold Sores Naturally”

Omega-3s for Prevention and Treatment of Oral Cancer

Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids may help in the prevention of both early and late stage oral and skin cancers, according to a study published in the journal Carcinogenesis.

The focus was mainly on a type of cancer called squamous-cell carcinoma. This is one of the major forms of skin cancer affecting the outer layers of the skin (mainly made up of squamous cells). The researchers point out that squamous-cell carcinoma can also occur in the lining of the digestive tract, lungs and other areas of the body.

The research was carried out in vitro meaning, they grew cell cultures in a lab. They used cell cutlures from several different cell lines inlcuding both malignant oral and skin cancers, alongside pre-malignant cells and normal skin and oral cells. When the researchers carried out these in vitro tests by adding fatty acids into the cell cultures, results showed that omega-3 fatty acids induced cell death in malignant and pre-malignant cells and the doses that did not affect normal cells.

Professor Kenneth Parkinson, head of the oral cancer research group says:

“We found that the omega-3 fatty acid selectively inhibited the growth of the malignant and pre-malignant cells at doses which did not affect the normal cells.”

This is very promising for the prevention and possible treatment of oral and skin cancers.

Since omega-3s cannot be made in the quantities that our bodies require, it is essential to get them from diet. Foods like salmon, flax seeds, sardines and walnuts should be part of your diet. If they aren’t consider taking a good quality supplement like Pathway Super Omega.

Media Hype Takes a Shot at Fish Oil

A study published earlier this week linking fish oil to prostate cancer has triggered a minor frenzy in the news media. In recent years, fish oil has been the proverbial “golden boy” of the supplement world, winning bout after bout and racking up benefits related to conditions from depression to heavyweights like cardiovascular disease. No surprise then that the moment a contender threatens the crown, the media is all over the opportunity to smear this truly valuable dietary component.

The study examined associations between blood omega-3 fatty acid levels and risk of prostate cancer in men. Men with higher blood levels of omega-3’s had a 71% higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer than men with lower blood levels. Study authors conclude that findings suggest that these blood fats are likely involved in prostate tumor development.

I know of no other single study for which the drawn conclusions have been more wrongly stretched, strengthened and extrapolated than this one. Media outlets twisted the result to mean that supplementing with fish oil and even eating fish could cause prostate cancer!

There are two pieces to the problem here.  Continue reading “Media Hype Takes a Shot at Fish Oil”
