Not Just a Weed: Health Benefits of Dandelion

IMGP4416My little guy has been presenting me with dandelions he picks on his way to school. To him, they aren’t unwelcome weeds on manicured lawns; to him, they are bright yellow flowers that make Mommy smile.

But they are also much more. Here are some of the health benefits of dandelion.

Digestive Aid: Dandelion roots and leaves have a bitter taste that stimulates the release of saliva and stomach acid, therefore increasing appetite. It also triggers a cascade of increased secretion of digestive juices throughout the gastrointestinal tract including bile and pancreatic secretions, both of which promote better digestion. In order to help with digestion, dandelion must be tasted, like when you take them in a tincture or tea.

Support Liver and Gallbladder Health: The dandelion plant is useful in the treatment of digestive disorders. The root of the plant stimulates the release of bile from the liver and gallbladder, which helps the body to digest fats. It also helps to flush the gallbladder and support the release of toxins by the liver. Because of this, dandelion is an excellent liver cleanser. At the same time, there is some evidence that dandelion may help to regulate cholesterol levels, which is also likely due to this bile flush response.

Urinary Tract Cleanser: Dandelion leaves act as a potassium-sparing diuretic and can be used to alleviate water retention such as retention that is due to PMS. This action also allows dandelion leaf to flush fluid through the kidneys, making it a good herb for cleansing the urinary tract.  Continue reading “Not Just a Weed: Health Benefits of Dandelion”

Belly Fat Help

apple+measuring tapeIt is difficult to “spot” reduce any specific area, including the abdomen. Belly fat is a common complaint (particularly among women) and can increase with age due to decreased estrogen levels, which affect body fat distribution. The trouble with belly fat is that it is not limited to subcutaneous fat (an extra layer of padding below the skin). It also includes visceral fat which lies deep inside your abdomen. Visceral fat produces various hormones and substances that can increase blood pressure, negatively impact cholesterol, and create insulin resistance. This in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancer. Key factors that need to be addressed include consuming a healthy diet (whole foods including fresh fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains and lean protein), regular exercise (ideally a combination of weight training/resistance and aerobic (activities such as brisk walking, jogging, biking, etc.), and a few basic supplements to aid the weight loss process.

If you are eating well, exercising and still having difficulty getting rid of your muffin top, a supplement may be helpful. Keep in mind that different supplements work differently. For example, some are thermogenics (increase metabolism), some can help control blood sugar levels, while others can decrease appetite and/or cravings.

Here are some options.  Continue reading “Belly Fat Help”

Tips for Allergy Relief

pathway allergy support plusAlthough it has been the coldest and longest winter in North America, and for many areas it still doesn’t feel like spring is here, one sign that it has arrived is the increasing number of symptoms associated with allergies –  sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes. The following information, which we posted last year, offers great tips to stay on top of your symptoms this season, and for allergy relief.

Millions of Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, and for many of these individuals, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, sinus pressure and pain are not only associated with spring and summer trees, grass and pollen, but are also triggered year-round by things like dust, mold and animal dander.

Environmental allergies are not a disease, but a symptom of immune dysfunction.

In order to treat allergies effectively, you need to focus on the root cause, as well as the symptoms. The immune system is built to respond to infection (viruses or bacteria) by producing antibodies. In the case of allergies, the immune system overreacts, treating these harmless substances as invaders. The antibody IgE (immunoglobulin E, which is produced against the allergen) triggers the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals like histamine, responsible for the symptoms of itchy, runny eyes and nose, and sneezing. This inflammation can spread and lead to other related disorders, as well. For example, people who suffer from allergies are said to be three times more likely to develop asthma, an inflammatory disease of the airways.  Continue reading “Tips for Allergy Relief”
