Pregnancy and Iodine

pregnancy and iodinePregnancy and iodine have an important connection. A new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics says that pregnant and breastfeeding women should make sure that the mineral iodine is in their prenatal supplements.

Iodine is a trace mineral that is essential in the human body. Many people know iodine is essential to thyroid hormone production, but it is also crucial to healthy brain development in a developing baby.

This is the first time that the American Academy of Pediatrics has made a statement regarding the use of iodine. It is estimated that about one third of pregnant women are deficient in iodine and only about 15% take a supplement that contains it. Severe iodine deficiency is associated with stunted physical and mental growth, and even marginal iodine deficiency can decrease brain functioning.

Pathway Prenatal Plus is a complete multivitamin, formulated to meet a woman’s nutritional needs during pregnancy and lactation. Extra amounts of calcium, folic acid and iron are included to support fetal development and maternal health. Also included in this formula are DHA from trademarked ingredient Neuromins™, iodine and choline, which are important nutrients needed for healthy neurological functioning and brain development of the fetus.

Pathway Prenatal Plus is currently 30% off at our big Summer Sale, through July 15.

Calcium and Women’s Health

calciumCalcium and women’s health have long been linked, and now a recently published study in the journal Osteoporosis International has found that there is no connection between calcium supplementation and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

For the study, researchers examined 74,245 women who were part of the Nurses’ Health Study. Calcium supplement usage and incident cardiovascular disease among all these participants was recorded.

Researchers noted that, not only did the women who consumed calcium supplements have no increased risk of CVD, but they had lower levels of trans fat, smoked less, and were more physically active than women who didn’t take any such supplements.

“Calcium is an essential nutrient most widely used for its bone health benefits, and government data show most Americans don’t get enough,” said Duffy MacKay, N.D., Senior Vice President for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition. “We encourage continued studies on calcium’s safety and benefits, but this study should help women feel confident that calcium supplements are an appropriate choice if they are not getting enough from food alone.”  Continue reading “Calcium and Women’s Health”

Safe Summer Tips

DSC00278We hope you had a lovely weekend! Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means warmer weather (finally), and the need for sunscreen, bug repellent and allergy support! Here are some safe summer tips for you and your family.

The Environmental Working Group released their best and safest sunscreens for 2014. Check the list to see if your sunscreen makes the grade. I have mentioned this multiple times but my favorite sunscreen for my little ones is Badger Sunscreen SPF 30. It protects them like no other sunscreen I have tried, especially for my littlest one is very fair. It creates a physical block using zinc oxide.

For more safe sunscreen options click here.

With warmer weather also come mosquitoes and black flies. I live up north around a lot of lakes, and although it is beautiful, it is a breeding ground for those pesky blood sucking insects. We use Quantum Buzzaway Insect Repellent to help keep the bugs away. Made with essential oils, it is even safe for my kids to use. Click here for more tips on how to protect yourself against mosquitoes and black flies, as well as recipes for your own insect repellent.  Continue reading “Safe Summer Tips”

Tips to Stay Regular

supremaOptimal digestive health depends on waste and toxins continually moving out through the bowels. Providing your digestive system with healthy food and good microbes will enhance your ability to properly digest all the foods you eat. Furthermore, good bowel habits can help prevent many common bowel conditions and keep other body systems working properly. It’s important to stay regular.

A fine balance exists between the bacteria found in the bowels and the ability of the intestines to defend against disease. Prebiotics such as inulin and fructooligosaccharides (found in bananas, leeks, garlic, and onions) increase the effectiveness of the microbes in the intestines, giving a natural boost to your immune system.

Unfortunately, imbalances can occur, sometimes leading to painful and embarrassing symptoms. The following information may help pinpoint common bowel conditions.  Continue reading “Tips to Stay Regular”
