Vitamin D3 Supplementation Benefits Heart Health

heartWe know that vitamin D is good for our bones, teeth, and immune system, and now a new study has added heart health to the list.

The study out of University of Leeds School of Medicine in the UK has shown that patients with chronic heart failure can benefit from daily supplementation of vitamin D3. Patients all had chronic heart failure and were all deficient in vitamin D3. Over the course of a year, half the patients were given a vitamin D3 supplement and the other half were given a placebo. Time to Spring Clean Your Body

lemon water

Opening windows, seeding your lawn, and cleaning your windows are some of the things most of us do in our homes when the first signs of spring start popping up. But our homes aren’t the only things we should be looking at – spring clean your body to get a fresh start and feel great!

A seasonal body cleanse can do wonders for our health. Cleansing or detoxifying can help the body rid itself of toxins that have built up in our systems over the months (or years).

A quality cleanse will enhance the body’s natural detoxification process, which includes the liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatics and blood. If you have never done a cleanse before, the variety of options available today can be confusing and daunting. Here are two that I like. Continue reading “Time to Spring Clean Your Body”

Spice Up Your Immune System With Oil of Oregano

reliance-oregano-oil_2Oregano can  be a tasty addition to a pizza or any Italian dish, but did you know that the oil extracted from this herb can have positive effects on your immune system, too?

In ancient Greece, Hippocrates used oregano as an antiseptic, and as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments. Current healthcare practitioners use oregano extract for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Oregano oil has so many benefits that it is probably a good herb to have around the house. Here are a few reasons why.

Antimicrobial: Oil of oregano contains two phenols called carvacrol and thymol, which have strong antimicrobial properties. A 2004 study demonstrated that oil of oregano showed antibacterial properties against 27 different bacteria (including salmonella, E. coli, and two staphylococcus species, some of the most common bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illnesses) and antiviral properties against the herpes virus (responsible for cold sores, chicken pox, and shingles), as well as antifungal properties against 18 different types of fungus. Washington Capitals Use Micronutrient Testing to Improve Performance

joewithpuckEven if you aren’t a hockey fan (how could you not be?), you might still know that the Washington Capitals are at the top of their division and are leading the National Hockey League in points.

They have great players, coaching and development, but Coach Barry Trotz also sees the value of using sport-science as an advantage. When one player was feeling run down, he had a blood analysis done and made adjustments to his diet. When his performance improved based on the results from the blood work, all the Capitals players were asked to do the testing.

Along with a micronutrient test, which reveals vitamin and mineral deficiencies, hormone and adrenal testing where also done. Personalized recommendations were made for each player based on the results. The reasoning for the testing is that stabilized micronutrient and hormonal levels could help the Capitals players recover better after games during a lengthy season and potentially prevent injuries. reliance-zinc-lozengesTrying to fight off a cold? Or have an irritating, persistent cough? The perfect companion to common cold symptoms, Pathway Zinc Lozenges may help relieve coughs and sore throats. Each lozenge contains 15 mg of zinc enhanced with vitamin C, bee propolis and slippery elm bark in a natural lemon flavor. Pathway Zinc Lozenges are best taken at the first sign of a cold and can help soothe a dry and irritated throat and strengthen immune function.

Zinc: Zinc is an important mineral that is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. Clinical studies support the use of zinc supplementation in reducing the duration of the common cold. Zinc lozenges are believed to work by interfering with viral replication and by preventing viruses from penetrating into cells.  Zinc is also an important cofactor for the antioxidant system superoxide dismutase (SOD).  Zinc speeds wound healing and is used for the healing of burns and surgical incisions.  Zinc is also involved in the sensory organs, the eyes, nose and tastebuds.
