Keep on Top of Heart Health

heart-handsTwo days ago, musician Tom Petty died of a heart attack at the age of 66. His legacy will be his music, which spanned 40 years and included songs like American Girl and Free Falling. However, his passing should also serve as a reminder that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women.

Heart disease is a term used to describe several conditions, many of which are related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart problems include angina, arrhythmias and heart failure. Continue reading “Keep on Top of Heart Health”

Bile Salts After Gallbladder Surgery

stomach-painIf you are one of millions of Americans who have had their gallbladder removed, then you are probably experiencing some unpleasant side effects when you eat certain foods. Fats in particular become very difficult to digest. In the past, the solution has been to avoid fats altogether. Cold or Allergies – How Do You Know?

sneeze2

My neighbor has been struggling with a cough, scratchy throat and runny nose for 2 months. She can’t figure out if it’s a cold or allergies. She is not alone. Fall is a prime time for allergies, but it’s also the time when you start to get more colds, thanks to kids bringing back all sorts of germs from school.

Meanwhile, allergies are an adverse reaction to a substance caused by an overactive immune system. Continue reading “Cold or Allergies – How Do You Know?”

Keeping Your Kids Healthy With Probiotics

kids-to-schoolWe have been free of illness all summer. No colds, flus or any other sort of viruses. But as I walked my kids to school this morning, I realized that this streak might end soon. Kids are exposed to all sorts of bad bugs at school, so it’s important for them to have a strong immune system.

One way to start it is to make sure they know how to properly wash their hands and that they are doing it frequently. But another important aspect of immune health is sugar consumption.

Sugar is often a culprit for weakening a child’s immune system, Continue reading “Keeping Your Kids Healthy With Probiotics”

Eat Your Brussels Sprouts! They Could Prevent Cancer

Brussels-sproutsIndole 3 carbinol (I3C), a substance found in some vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, etc.), and its metabolite di-indolylmethane (DIM) exhibit protective powers against some types of cancer, including breast cancer. These substances help support healthy estrogen metabolism by the liver, thereby potentially decreasing the risk of estrogen-sensitive cancers.

Factors such as lifestyle, exposure to viruses, stress, air pollution, and diet all play important roles in the overall risk of getting cancer. Various studies have shown, though, that a high intake of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts has been associated with lower risk of several types of cancer. Why? Continue reading “Eat Your Brussels Sprouts! They Could Prevent Cancer”
