Ear Infections and Children

Apparently, three out of 4 children will suffer from an ear infection according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Ear infections occur when viruses or bacteria get inside the ear, usually the result of a cold or other illness. Fluid and mucus can become trapped deep inside the ear. They are more common with bottle feeders and amongst boys.

My little guy (18 months on Monday) has had two ear infections and both times resulted in a visit to his doctor and both times we were given a prescription for antibiotics but with a word of caution. My doctor does not like to give out antibiotics for ear infections, because according to her most ear infections are caused by viruses, and even those that are bacteria related clear up on their own within a few days. This actually is similar to the guidelines put out by the  American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Among other things, those guidelines recommend that pain medication be prescribed for most children and antibiotics used only if the conditions persist or don’t improve. Village Green Sale Ends on Saturday the 17th!

Our Summer Sale is coming to an end and I hope that you are taking advantage of the great deals plus the value added service that we provide. Pathway products are currently 30% off. This is a great opportunity for you to get your multivitamins,  omega 3s and all your essential nutrients. Pathway B Complex is one of my favorite products from this line. It contains all your B vitamins necessary for metabolism of carbs, protein and fat, nervous function, adrenal health, healthy hair skin and nails, energy, hormone health and so much more. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to assimilate the Bs, and B vitamins all work better when taken together.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), also known as the “Anti-Stress Vitamin,” is just one of the many vitamins included. It supports the adrenal gland, where it aids in the production of hormones that help the body respond to stress, and the brain, where it produces neurotransmitters that are depleted in stressful situations.

Fish Oils May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

New information came out today that women who regularly take fish oils may have a lower risk of breast cancer! Wahoo! The study was on 35,000 women who were part of a larger study looking at different supplements and health. When the researchers looked at the women who took the fish oil supplements, they found they had a 32% reduced risk of breast cancer, which appeared to be restricted to invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type. Researchers cautioned that fish oil supplements should not be taken for reducing breast cancer risk, and have issued a statement that “without confirming studies…we should not draw any conclusions about a causal relationship.” The study was “observational” only, and not a randomized trial that compared the use of fish oil with a group not using fish oil and the effect on cancer rates.

I think this is another reason to take a good quality Omega 3. Keep in mind that diet, exercise and genetics play huge roles in breast cancer and must be considered as well.

Tell the FDA to Save Antibiotics

This is the title of a recent article put out by the Human Health and Industrial Farming Campaign. Apparently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a rule that could weaken already-lenient controls on the use of antibiotics in food animal production. Right now many industrial farmers use antibiotics to compensate for the squalor these poor animals live in. Overcrowded pens and unsanitary conditions lead to overuse of antibiotics already. We all know what overuse of these drugs eventually does – weakens our defenses against certain strains of bacteria and basically makes them pointless.

So, what can we do…

Make your voice heard:  Write a letter.  If you follow the above link it will tell you what to do.

Buy smart:  Buy grass-fed, free range, antibiotic-free poultry, livestock and their respective products, eggs and milk. Yes, they are more expensive, but the benefits outweigh the ingestion of antibiotics on a possible daily basis.

Go Meatless:  You can cut down on your grocery bill, and get extra health benefits, if you have two vegetarian dinners per week.

Take Probiotics:  A good probiotic can provide many health benefits, including digestive support and immune support

Options for Parkinson’s

Dr. Jerry Teplitz has a lot to say when it comes to keeping a brain healthy. In one newsletter, he writes about Dr. Julian Whitaker’s use of glutathione for Parkinson’s. Glutathione is an important antioxidant in the liver’s detoxification pathways. It changes chemicals and metabolic by-products into harmless substances for excretion from the body.

This is what he says about it.

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating affliction that causes tremors in the body, which can make it impossible to get around. According to Dr. Whitaker, his clinic has been having great success for years using intravenous (IV) glutathione and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). By using both therapies, many of his patients, after a few treatments, go from needing a walker or cane to being able to walk without aid.

It turns out that Parkinson’s sufferers have dangerously low levels of glutathione in parts of the brain. While oral glutathione cannot get into the brain, intravenous glutathione can.

Whitaker also uses HBOT because it floods the brain with oxygen which slows neuronal degeneration, mobilizes rejuvenating stem cells and enhances the growth of new blood vessels in damaged areas.
