I’m How Old?! The Real Age Test

I am guessing that most people know about Dr. Oz. If you don’t, he is the guy on television who takes the mystery out of how our bodies work, on The Dr. Oz show. He is a huge proponent of healthy eating, supplementation and most important, awareness of how our bodies work.

Well, he also has this nifty tool called the Real Age Test. This “test” quizzes you on everything from how much fruit you eat per day to how happy you are in your relationships. It also addresses, smoking, sun exposure, family history, and supplement intake, as well as how often you visit your family doctor. Once it calculates your answers, you get your “real age,” which is the biological age of your body based on over 100 factors – many that you control.

So I took the test and I was older than my numerical age. I am not going to tell you either number but after getting over my initial shock and disappointment, I went over the reasons that my age was higher than I had hoped. Here they are, for all the world to see: Continue reading “I’m How Old?! Blood Pressure – Silent Killer

High Blood Pressure, or hypertension, is referred to as a “silent killer” because it can be deadly, but in the early stages is usually without noticeable symptoms. A diagnosis of hypertension is usually “incidental” and made through a blood pressure reading by a health care practitioner. Hypertension can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and heart attack. It has been estimated that a reduction of 5 points in systolic BP could reduce stroke mortality by 14% and decrease cardiovascular disease mortality by 9%.

Hypertension is a growing problem in North America, affecting about 1 in 5 people in the United States alone. What’s worse is that 30% of those affected aren’t even aware that they have high blood pressure. Left uncontrolled, hypertension can lead to a variety of serious health problems. Blood Pressure Support from Pathway can help control hypertension and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. Coleus forskohlii helps in supporting a healthy mood. Hawthorn is included for its studied benefits for healthy circulation. Magnesium and hops are added to aid in the relaxation of the central nervous system. And, taurine supports the central nervous system and is thought to be helpful in dealing with anxiety.

5 Tips for Safer Barbecuing

Recently, I had someone ask me the following question: “In the summer I really enjoy having friends and family over for cookouts. But, I have heard that barbecuing can be bad for your health. Is this true?”

Great question. The answer is yes, but don’t cancel your BBQ plans just yet. Research has identified two carcinogenic by-products associated with barbecuing red meat, poultry, lamb, pork and fish. The two carcinogens to be aware of are heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). HCAs are formed from high temperatures overcooking or char-grilling meat. Studies have shown that this compound can cause cancer in mice. And, PAHs are formed when fat drips onto the coal or hot surface. The smoke carries the PAHs to the food. They can also form directly on the food when it is charred.

With this in mind, here are ways of making your barbecued foods safer:

Stay Hydrated – Not Just With Water

With temperatures soaring past 100 degrees, staying hydrated is important.  Drinking plenty of water is crucial, however, you aren’t just losing H2O when you sweat, you are losing key electrolytes. Electrolytes aid in a number of vital bodily processes. Many heart and nerve functions, muscle control and coordination, and the body’s ability to absorb fluids all depend on a healthy balance of electrolytes. The most common electrolytes found in the human body are sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and calcium.

So you can see how important it would be to make sure that you maintain a good balance of water and electrolytes.  Here are some tips to stay healthy in this heat.

  • Minimize exercise outside.  Early morning and late evening are better times to be outside, when it is a little cooler.
  • Eat plenty of fluids.  Fruits like watermelon and cantaloupe are not only delicious but are mostly water.
  • Drink water with electrolytes. If you find yourself outside and sweating, add an electrolyte mix to your water.  My favorite is Emergen-C. They are very convenient and come in a variety of flavors. (And they are on sale until tomorrow.)
