March Madness of the Mucous Membrane

ss March sale webThe winter months can bring on extremely dry air. By the month of March, almost everyone north of the southern-most states has had the heat turned on in their homes and has been breathing relatively dry air for nearly 6 months, creating the ideal condition for sinus infections.

Most of us spend nearly all of our time indoors (or in heated cars) in the winter, which can wreak havoc with an already inflamed mucous membrane. This is the time of year when we can most appreciate the benefits of moisture for our nose and sinuses. A warm mist humidifier in the bedroom and in your office (if it’s an enclosed space) can make quite a difference. Continue reading “March Madness of the Mucous Membrane”

Wellness Experts Get Sick Too

sickLast summer I heard one of the loudest wake-up calls of my life – second only to the times when my children became very sick. As some of you may know, it is the struggle with my children’s health that inspired my practice.

I, myself, became very sick and experienced a host of debilitating symptoms. It became so serious that I stopped seeing clients. With the help of many colleagues, and through a determination to uncover the root cause of my illness, I was able to tie my symptoms to viruses, which became reactivated due to the inordinate amount of stress I was experiencing. Feeling the Winter Blues?

SADWhen you hear the acronym SAD, you would rightly assume that it is referring to the Standard American Diet. But there is another SAD which is also important to talk about – Seasonal Affective Disorder. What is this particular SAD? Think “winter blues.” Many people notice a change in the way they feel at the start of the colder season – lethargy, weight gain, loss of libido, difficulty concentrating, and even low grade depression. Some may have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning, sleep longer, crave carbohydrates and feel less joy in everyday activities. Continue reading “Feeling the Winter Blues?”
