Pregnancy and Vitamin D Status

Read the following article that I picked up at my doctor’s office the other day. It is a nice overall piece about vitamin D deficiency and its role in almost every aspect of this important nutrient.

More Know About Vitamin D Benefits
By Don Sapatkin

Amy McDonald, 34 weeks into her second pregnancy with gestational diabetes, was in for a routine checkup in Bala Cynwyd: blood pressure (fine), fetal heartbeat (loud), review of home blood-sugar monitoring (time-consuming).

A lab test for Vitamin D had come back low on a previous visit, and McDonald was now taking supplements.

“Any problems with the Vitamin D?” asked her doctor, Daphne M. Goldberg, who had recommended at least 10 times the dosage in federal guidelines. (No problems.)

Most women don’t hear about Vitamin D during prenatal visits. Indeed, studies linking widespread deficiency of the “sunshine vitamin” to a host of seemingly unrelated conditions – among them heart disease, arthritis, depression, psoriasis, influenza, and several types of cancer – have been coming so fast and furious that government guidelines can’t keep up. No one even knows what a “normal” level should be. Continue reading “Pregnancy and Vitamin D Status”

Support Your Immune System: Probiotics

Beneficial bacteria are critical to a healthy digestive and immune system. We all have them and without them, poor assimilation of nutrients, intestinal irritation or constipation can result. But their effects go beyond those commonly associated with digestion, including affecting our immune system.

Some preliminary studies also report that certain probiotics can play a role in reducing the development of allergies in children, decreasing Helicobacter pylori colonization of the stomach, helping patients cope with side effects of antibiotics, managing relapse of some inflammatory bowel conditions, decreasing the risk of certain cancers, decreasing dental-caries-causing microbes in the mouth, and keeping healthy people healthy.

Here are some other clinical benefits of probiotics:

Gastrointestinal Health: Probiotics have a beneficial effect on specific pathologic conditions. Many studies support the use of probiotics for digestive health. Probiotics may also help prevent traveler’s diarrhea and antibiotic-related diarrhea. Continue reading “Support Your Immune System: Probiotics”

More Cancer Risk with HRT

A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association last month, based on data collected for the ongoing federal Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), has found that women taking estrogen and progesterin had an increased risk of breast cancer. The women who experienced the greatest increase in risk were those who had a previous history of hormone therapy and resumed taking it as part of the WHI study. According to one of the authors, JoAnn E. Manson, “There was an 85 percent increase in breast cancer among the women who had used hormone therapy in the past.” This finding echoes results of other studies, that a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer increases the longer she takes the combination of estrogen and progesterin. Manson says it is not yet clear whether risk increases even more for women who stop taking HT and then resume it, compared with those who never take a break.

If you have any questions about hormone replacement therapy, Village Green has pharmacists who may be able to help you with some answers regarding this controversial therapy.

BPA in Our Food

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical that has been linked to a wide array of health issues such as reproductive abnormalities, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. It is used to harden plastics and line containers and is not something that I would want to ingest ever, never mind on a daily basis. I have written about this topic before and it still amazes me that BPA has not been banned. Although, many companies have taken BPA out of baby bottles, which is a small step forward, the stuff that goes into the bottles may still contain this cancer-causing chemical. A University Texas study found that Enfamil baby formula had higher levels of BPA than a can of V8 juice.

Here is a scary stat: 90% of newborns have levels of BPA in their teeny little bodies. Welcome to the world, little ones. With technological advances, there should be no reason why BPA is needed to line cans, or to be used at all, for that matter.

Read this blog from takepart.com about the foods that contain BPA.

In the meantime, breastfeed your babies if you can, and limit canned foods of all kinds.

Restless Legs Syndrome

People who suffer from this condition often complain of creepy-crawly sensations or itchy burning feelings, especially at night. RLS can wreak havoc on sleep and disrupts people’s work and social lives, because there is an almost irresistible urge to move their limbs to relieve the sensation, if only temporarily. Although the causes of Restless Legs Syndrome are still only presumed, the majority of studies are focusing on a combination of iron and dopamine deficiency.

Here are some supplements to try:

Iron: If you have RLS, have your ferritin levels tested. About 20% of sufferers are deficient in ferritin (the form in which your body stores iron). Iron supplementation is generally recommended when ferritin levels measure less than 50ng/mL. For those with a deficiency, studies have shown that taking 200 to 300mg of oral ferrous sulfate up to three times per day can improve RLS symptoms if taken over several months. Before you start chowing down on iron tablets, talk to your doctor about this and have your iron levels monitored regularly if you are supplementing.

Folic Acid: For those who have family history of RLS, high doses of folic acid seem to alleviate symptoms. Dennis Neary Jr., ND suggests that, “Perhaps there is some deficiency that gets passed from gene to gene that causes malabsorption on the folic acid end.” Recommended doses are pretty high, so it best that you work with a health care provider.

Magnesium: Sometimes RLS seems to be caused by an electrolyte imbalance. Patients with eating disorders, or who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, often develop RLS. Both these conditions disrupt electrolyte balance. If this is the case, magnesium may help because it promotes muscle and nerve health. Taking 200-800mg of elemental magnesium per day at night, may help those twitches.

L-theanine: This amino acid found in green tea promotes wave activity associated with deep sleep and is a precursor to the relaxing neurotransmitter GABA. Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum recommends it is a natural remedy for sleep, even though there is little evidence that it may help directly with RLS. He recommends 200mg of L-theanine 1 hour before bedtime to help you relax and sleep well.
