Stay Slim with Chocolate!

This is my kind of study! New research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that people who eat a small amount of chocolate are thinner than those who eat chocolate less often.

Although this study did not specify the type of chocolate, cocoa (which is most present in dark chocolate) is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which help fight inflammation, lower blood pressure and improve overall vascular function.

According to lead author Beatrice Golomb, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California-San Diego, the antioxidants also affect metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance contributes to hypertension and obesity.

“The chocolate provided better metabolism for all calories, not just the chocolate calories.”

However, before you starting packing away the candy bars in hopes of keeping weight at bay, keep in mind that most of them contain at least 200 calories, tons of sugar and are made with milk chocolate (little or no cocoa). Limit chocolate to one ounce of dark chocolate per day. For those of you who aren’t dark chocolate fans, here is a tip. Start with one that has a lower percentage of cocoa, like 55%, and let the piece of chocolate melt a little on your tongue. As you acquire a taste for dark, then you can experiment with richer and stronger chocolate.

Increase in Autism Rates

A new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 88 American children has some form of autism spectrum disorder. That’s a 78% increase in 10 years.

The increase in numbers are attributed to better diagnosis, broader diagnosis, and better awareness. However, according to Mark Roithmayr, president of the advocacy group Autism Speaks, the reason for about 50% of the increase is unknown.

Research has pointed to environmental changes as one of the reasons for this increase. The three BIG environmental influences seem to be:

1) Pesticides: Infants and small children should be consuming organic foods as much as possible. Especially when it comes to fruits, vegetables and dairy.

2) Overuse of antibiotics: Ear infections are very common in children and so is prescribing antibiotics. Most ear infections are viral and will not be helped by antibiotics. Overuse can cause resistance to superbugs, as well as lowered immunity. Continue reading “Increase in Autism Rates”

Make Your Own Baby Food

As my daughter rounded the 6-month mark, I began to think about what sorts of foods I would start her on. I perused the grocery aisles and was not impressed with the selection, even with the organic and natural varieties. They seemed colorless and bland, and when I read the ingredients lists, water was near the top.

Convenience is definitely a selling point when it comes to jarred baby food. But I started wondering – how complicated and time-consuming could making my own baby food really be? So I left the baby food aisle and headed over to the produce area and picked up some organic carrots, beets, bananas and apples.

The only equipment you need to make your own baby food is a pot! But if you have a steamer, then you can use that, too. Wash, peel and chop your fruits and veggies and steam them until the are tender. If a fork easily passes through, then it’s ready. If steamed vegetables and fruits are soft enough, you can mush them with a fork. I also like to use a handheld blender. Continue reading “Make Your Own Baby Food”

New Guidelines for Sinus Infections: NO ANTIBIOTICS

New guidelines by the Infectious Diseases Sociey of America (IDSA) say that treating sinus infections with antibiotics (standard practice in the US ) won’t help most cases and may actually do more harm.

According to the IDSA, sinus infections are the fifth leading reason for antibiotic prescriptions, but as many as 98% are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not and cannot treat viruses. Because there is no easy way to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial, many doctors prescribe antibiotics… just in case. The problem with this is that since most infections aren’t bacterial, the antibiotics won’t help and can actually increase antibiotic resistance.

If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from sinus infections every year, there are options that can help ease your symptoms. Check out the Sinus Survivial Program by Dr. Rob Ivker. His protocol has helped many people who have suffered for years. Through diet, nasal irrigation and supplements, you can finally have relief from sinus congestion and infections.

Get Rid of Fleas Naturally

Fleas are a given when you have a dog or cat that goes outside. These pesky, microscopic pests cause scratching and itching and great discomfort to your furry loved ones. Regular cleaning interrupts the life cycle of the fleas and greatly cuts down on the number of adult fleas that end up on your pet, especially if you act before flea season begins. So start your program with these nontoxic steps:

a. Steam clean your carpets.

b. Clean and vacuum floors, couches and beds, particularly where your pet hangs out, at least once a week.

c. Wash all linens in hot soapy water. Heat kills all stages of flea life.

d. Give your pet a bath with a natural anti-flea product like Halo Herbal Dip, and then go through their fur with a flea comb and remove any fleas. They are the size of a pinhead and black. When your dog’s fur is wet and soapy, the fleas are less likely to get away from you. Continue reading “Get Rid of Fleas Naturally”
