Spring Sale at Village Green until April 30

Village Green Apothecary is having a big sale on major brands. Pathway products are 30% off and the following brands are 25% off: Metagenics, Xymogen, Nordic Naturals, Thorne, Megafood, Enzymatic Therapy, Jarrow, Garden of Life and Boiron (some exceptions apply).

So now is the time to stock up on favorites.

For me, Pathway Allergy Support Plus (which I talked about a couple of days ago here), is a must have, especially this time of year.

And for those who need to take iron but fear its side-effects (like constipation), Megafood’s Blood Builder is an iron supplement made from food, that is easy on the digestive tract and contains synergistic nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin B12 to enhance its absorption.

The sale goes on until April 30.  Happy shopping!

Spring Cleaning…Your Body

Opening windows, seeding your lawn, and putting away winter coats are some of the things most of us do in our homes when the first signs of spring start popping up. But our homes aren’t the only things we should be looking at when it comes to spring cleaning.

A seasonal body cleanse can do wonders for our health. Cleansing or detoxifying can help the body rid itself of toxins that have built up in our systems over the months (or years).

A quality cleanse will enhance the body’s natural detoxification process, which includes the liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatics, and blood. If you have never done a cleanse before, the variety of options available today can be confusing and daunting. Here are two that I like.

For first-timers or people with very sensitive systems, I recommend a gentle cleanse like Renew Life First Cleanse. It is a combination of organic herbs that supports normal cleansing and organ detoxification functions and is designed for people who have never taken a total body cleansing supplement. It lasts 2 weeks and is simple and effective.

Pathway Ultra Cleansing System AM/PM offers a little more digestive cleansing action and is a 30-day cleanse. This is the one that I do twice a year. Continue reading “Spring Cleaning…Your Body”

Natural Support for Allergy Symptoms

Allergy season is upon us… and sooner than in most years, thanks to a shorter and warmer winter. Millions of Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, and for many of these individuals, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, sinus pressure and pain are not only associated with spring and summer trees, grass and pollen, but are also triggered year-round by things like dust, mold and animal dander.

Environmental allergies are not a disease, but a symptom of immune dysfunction.

In order to effectively treat allergies, you need to focus on the root cause, as well as the symptoms. The immune system is built to respond to infection (viruses or bacteria) by producing antibodies. In the case of allergy, the immune system overreacts, treating these harmless substances as invaders. The antibody IgE (immunoglobulin E, which is produced against the allergen) triggers the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals like histamine, responsible for the symptoms of itchy, runny eyes and nose, and sneezing. This inflammation can spread and lead to other related disorders, as well. For example, people who suffer from allergies are said to be three times more likely to develop asthma, an inflammatory disease of the airways. Sunday Radio Show: Anti-Aging & Telomeres

Join us this Sunday morning as our host Dr. Kevin Passero and his special guest Dr. William Andrews discuss the anti-aging potential of telomere biology.

William H. Andrews, Ph.D., has worked in the biotech industry for 30 years, focusing the last 18 years on finding ways to extend human lifespan through work with lengthening telomeres, which are genetic structures found at the ends of our chromosomes. Short telomeres have been associated with the aging process, and preserving or lengthening telomeres is thought to be one way we might reach for “the fountain of youth.” Dr. Andrews is presently the founder, President and CEO of Sierra Sciences, a biotech company focused exclusively on developing pharmaceuticals that will induce the production of telomerase (the enzyme that re-lengthens telomeres) in all our cells.

Tune in this Sunday from 10-11am on 1500 AM (WFED) or listen live on the web. Our shows are streamed everywhere.

Last week’s show was on “Solving the Belly Blues” – applying the principles of functional medicine to the treatment of digestive issues. Click to listen.

The Pleasure and Pain…of Sugar

A few days ago, 60 Minutes aired an episode where Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported that sugar, in the way it’s being consumed today, is a toxin.

The word toxin sounds very serious, especially when talking about sweets and treats we love, crave, and feed our families. But the reality is that many Americans eat a SAD diet. No, that’s not a Standard American Diet, but a Sad American Diet. For many of us, our diets are filled with sugar, dangerous types of fats, chemicals and ingredients that would be found sooner in a lab experiment than a cookbook. These “nutrient void, calorically-dense sub-foods” are wreaking havoc on our bodies and our health. We eat more than we used to, not only because the serving sizes are so much bigger, but because we’re searching for a sense of satiety that these foods simply can’t provide. What’s worse, we slowly build up a tolerance for the “feel good” feeling that we’re hoping for when eating them and need to consume more and more to achieve the same effect.

So, what can we do? Continue reading “The Pleasure and Pain…of Sugar”
